SahihAlBukhari-017-001-2571 | Narrated Ibn Abbas: Allah Messenger ﷺ passed by two graves and said; Both of them persons in the grave are being tortured; and they are not being tortured for a major sin. This one used not to save himself from being soiled with his urine; and the other used to go about with calumnies among the people to rouse hostilities; e.g.; one goes to a person and tells him that so-and-so says about him such-and-such evil things. The Prophet ﷺ then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree; split it into two pieces and planted one on each grave and said; It is hoped that their punishment may be abated till those two pieces of the leaf get dried. The Prophet ﷺ said; These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin to avoid. The Prophet ﷺ then added; Yes! they are being tortured for a major sin. Indeed; one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies to make enmity between friends. The Prophet ﷺ then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree; broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave.
