There are many Islamic Search Engines and web sites in the internet, however, they suffer many shortcomings:
- They are limited to what they have stored in their database
- They are completely blind to other contents in the web in an unstructured form like twitter, Facebook and other web sites.
- The researcher will have to know which book(s) contain the information he needs and be able to search for it.
- Most if not all of the libraries are either in English or Arabic and few are multilingual
- All libraries are textual and can not search media files like videos or audio files.
- Even with web sites that provide a functionality to search the entire library, the results are not inter-linked to provide the complete picture. For example, a search result may return a name of a notable person, but the document does not create a link for his name to another page that contains his Biography information.
The fact that there are many libraries, is an indication of fragmented isolated efforts. Not to mention that the libraries has been built on obsolete technologies and therefore requiring a lot of effort and money to build and maintain.
Not surprising to see good efforts in this field has been done, but failed to be maintained because of lack of resources. Some wonderful web sites were started as a single man project, but soon faded away because of lack of interest or other reasons.
Some projects or libraries contain brilliant ideas like those developed for Higher Education research projects, but they are very much confined to being an isolated effort and intended for a specific purpose and time period, for example, some projects have done a wonderful job using state of the art technology in analyzing the Quran but does not include other sciences like Hadeeth or Fiqh etc.
HodHood Project is a team effort that will build and maintain a platform for all Islamic Sciences, in as many languages as possible or there are authentic relevant material. At the early stage it will form a container for all written or published books, and eventually grow the project to translate contents.
