SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1311 | Narrated Jabir: A bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said; Please take my Pledge of allegiance for Islam. So the Prophet took from him the Pledge of allegiance for Islam. He came the next day with a fever and said to the Prophet ﷺ Cancel my pledge. But the Prophet ﷺ refused and when the bedouin went away; the Prophet said; Medina is like a pair of bellows furnace : It expels its impurities and brightens and clears its good. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Islam in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on Whoever violates a Baia in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1592 | Narrated Ibn Abbas: I used to teach the Quran to some people of the Muhajirln emigrants ; among whom there was Abdulrahman Bin Auf. While I was in his house at Mina; and he was with Umar Bin AlKhattab during Umar last Hajj; Abdulrahman came to me and said; Would that you had seen the man who came today to the Chief of the Believers Umar ; saying; O Chief of the Believers! What do you think about so-and-so who says; If Umar should die; I will give the pledge of allegiance to such-andsuch person; as by Allah; the pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr was nothing but a prompt sudden action which got established afterwards. Umar became angry and then said; Allah willing; I will stand before the people tonight and warn them against those people who want to deprive the others of their rights the question of rulership. Abdulrahman said; I said; O Chief of the believers! Do not do that; for the season of Hajj gathers the riff-raff and the rubble; and it will be they who will gather around you when you stand to address the people. And I am afraid that you will get up and say something; and some people will spread your statement and may not say what you have actually said and may not understand its meaning; and may interpret it incorrectly; so you should wait till you reach Medina; as it is the place of emigration and the place of Prophet Traditions; and there you can come in touch with the learned and noble people; and tell them your ideas with confidence; and the learned people will understand your statement and put it in its proper place. On that; Umar said; By Allah! Allah willing; I will do this in the first speech I will deliver before the people in Medina. Ibn Abbas added: We reached Medina by the end of the month of Dhu AlHijja; and when it was Friday; we went quickly to the Masjid as soon as the sun had declined; and I saw Saeed Bin Zaid Bin Amr Bin Nufail sitting at the corner of the pulpit; and I too sat close to him so that my knee was touching his knee; and after a short while Umar Bin AlKhattab came out; and when I saw him coming towards us; I said to Saeed Bin Zaid Bin Amr Bin Nufail Today Umar will say such a thing as he has never said since he was chosen as Caliph. Saeed denied my statement with astonishment and said; What thing do you expect Umar to say the like of which he has never said before? In the meantime; Umar sat on the pulpit and when the callmakers for the prayer had finished their call; Umar stood up; and having glorified and praised Allah as He deserved; he said; Now then; I am going to tell you something which Allah has written for me to say. I do not know; perhaps it portends my death; so whoever understands and remembers it; must narrate it to the others wherever his mount takes him; but if somebody is afraid that he does not understand it; then it is unlawful for him to tell lies about me. Allah sent Muhammad with the Truth and revealed the Holy Book to him; and among what Allah revealed; was the Verse of the Rajam the stoning of married person male & female who commits illegal sexual intercourse; and we did recite this Verse and understood and memorized it. Allah Messenger ﷺ did carry out the punishment of stoning and so did we after him. I am afraid that after a long time has passed; somebody will say; By Allah; we do not find the Verse of the Rajam in Allah Book; and thus they will go astray by leaving an obligation which Allah has revealed. And the punishment of the Rajam is to be inflicted to any married person male & female ; who commits illegal sexual intercourse; if the required evidence is available or there is conception or confession. And then we used to recite among the Verses in Allah Book: O people! Do not claim to be the offspring of other than your fathers; as it is disbelief unthankfulness on your part that you claim to be the offspring of other than your real father. Then Allah Messenger ﷺ said; Do not praise me excessively as Jesus; son of Marry was praised; but call me Allah Slave and His Apostles. O people! I have been informed that a speaker amongst you says; By Allah; if Umar should die; I will give the pledge of allegiance to such-and-such person. One should not deceive oneself by saying that the pledge of allegiance given to Abu Bakr was given suddenly and it was successful. No doubt; it was like that; but Allah saved the people from its evil; and there is none among you who has the qualities of Abu Bakr. Remember that whoever gives the pledge of allegiance to anybody among you without consulting the other Muslims; neither that person; nor the person to whom the pledge of allegiance was given; are to be supported; lest they both should be killed. And no doubt after the death of the Prophet ﷺ we were informed that the Ansar disagreed with us and gathered in the shed of Bani Sada. Ali and AlZubair and whoever was with them; opposed us; while the emigrants gathered with Abu Bakr. I said to Abu Bakr; Let go to these Ansari brothers of ours. So we set out seeking them; and when we approached them; two pious men of theirs met us and informed us of the final decision of the Ansar; and said; O group of Muhajirin emigrants ! Where are you going? We replied; We are going to these Ansari brothers of ours. They said to us; You shouldnt go near them. Carry out whatever we have already decided. I said; By Allah; we will go to them. And so we proceeded until we reached them at the shed of Bani Sada. Behold! There was a man sitting amongst them and wrapped in something. I asked; Who is that man? They said; He is Saad Bin Ubada. I asked; What is wrong with him? They said; He is sick. After we sat for a while; the Ansar speaker said; None has the right to be worshipped but Allah; and praising Allah as He deserved; he added; To proceed; we are Allah Ansar helpers and the majority of the Muslim army; while you; the emigrants; are a small group and some people among you came with the intention of preventing us from practicing this matter of caliphate and depriving us of it. When the speaker had finished; I intended to speak as I had prepared a speech which I liked and which I wanted to deliver in the presence of Abu Bakr; and I used to avoid provoking him. So; when I wanted to speak; Abu Bakr said; Wait a while. I disliked to make him angry. So Abu Bakr himself gave a speech; and he was wiser and more patient than I. By Allah; he never missed a sentence that I liked in my own prepared speech; but he said the like of it or better than it spontaneously. After a pause he said; O Ansar! You deserve all the qualities that you have attributed to yourselves; but this question of Caliphate is only for the Quraish as they are the best of the Arabs as regards descent and home; and I am pleased to suggest that you choose either of these two men; so take the oath of allegiance to either of them as you wish. And then Abu Bakr held my hand and Abu Ubaida Bin AlJarrah hand who was sitting amongst us. I hated nothing of what he had said except that proposal; for by Allah; I would rather have my neck chopped off as expiator for a sin than become the ruler of a nation; one of whose members is Abu Bakr; unless at the time of my death my own-self suggests something I dont feel at present. And then one of the Ansar said; I am the pillar on which the camel with a skin disease eczema rubs itself to satisfy the itching i.e.; I am a noble ; and I am as a high class palm tree! O Quraish. There should be one ruler from us and one from you. Then there was a hue and cry among the gathering and their voices rose so that I was afraid there might be great disagreement; so I said; O Abu Bakr! Hold your hand out. He held his hand out and I pledged allegiance to him; and then all the emigrants gave the Pledge of allegiance and so did the Ansar afterwards. And so we became victorious over Saad Bin Ubada whom AlAnsar wanted to make a ruler. One of the Ansar said; You have killed Saad Bin Ubada. I replied; Allah has killed Saad Bin Ubada. Umar added; By Allah; apart from the great tragedy that had happened to us i.e. the death of the Prophet ; there was no greater problem than the allegiance pledged to Abu Bakr because we were afraid that if we left the people; they might give the Pledge of allegiance after us to one of their men; in which case we would have given them our consent for something against our real wish; or would have opposed them and caused great trouble. So if any person gives the Pledge of allegiance to somebody to become a Caliph without consulting the other Muslims; then the one he has selected should not be granted allegiance; lest both of them should be killed. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Charity in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The Rajm of a married lady pregnant through illegal sexual intercourse in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3155 | Narrated Aisha: the wife of the Prophet When believing women came to the Prophet ﷺ as emigrants; he used to test them in accordance with the order of Allah. O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants; examine them... 60.10 So if anyone of those believing women accepted the above mentioned conditions; she accepted the conditions of faith. When they agreed on those conditions and confessed that with their tongues; Allah Messenger ﷺ would say to them; Go; I have accepted your oath of allegiance for Islam. By Allah; and hand of Allah Messenger ﷺ never touched the hand of any woman; but he only used to take their pledge of allegiance orally. By Allah; Allah Messenger ﷺ did not take the pledge of allegiance of the women except in accordance with what Allah had ordered him. When he accepted their pledge of allegiance he would say to them; I have accepted your oath of allegiance. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And The Battle Of Badr in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on If an idolatress or a Christian woman becomes a Muslim while she is the wife of Dhimmi or a Mushrik at war with the Muslims in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3351 | Narrated Aisha: the wife of the Prophet Allah Messenger ﷺ died while Abu Bakr was at a place called AlSunah AlAliya Umar stood up and said; By Allah! Allah Messenger ﷺ is not dead! Umar later on said; By Allah! Nothing occurred to my mind except that. He said; Verily! Allah will resurrect him and he will cut the hands and legs of some men. Then Abu Bakr came and uncovered the face of Allah Messenger ﷺ ; kissed him and said; Let my mother and father be sacrificed for you; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ; you are good in life and in death. By Allah in Whose Hands my life is; Allah will never make you taste death twice. Then he went out and said; O oath-taker! Dont be hasty. When Abu Bakr spoke; Umar sat down. Abu Bakr praised and glorified Allah and said; No doubt! Whoever worshipped Muhammad; then Muhammad is dead; but whoever worshipped Allah; then Allah is Alive and shall never die. Then he recited Allah Statement.:- O Muhammad Verily you will die; and they also will die. 39.30 He also recited:- Muhammad is no more than an Apostle; and indeed many Apostles have passed away; before him; If he dies Or is killed; will you then Turn back on your heels? And he who turns back On his heels; not the least Harm will he do to Allah And Allah will give reward to those Who are grateful. 3.144 The people wept loudly; and the Ansar were assembled with Sad Bin Ubada in the shed of Bani Saida. They said to the emigrants. There should be one Amir from us and one from you. Then Abu Bakr; Umar Bin AlKhattab and Abu baida Bin AlJarrah went to them. Umar wanted to speak but Abu Bakr stopped him. Umar later on used to say; By Allah; I intended only to say something that appealed to me and I was afraid that Abu Bakr would not speak so well. Then Abu Bakr spoke and his speech was very eloquent. He said in his statement; We are the rulers and you Ansars are the ministers i.e. advisers ; Hubab Bin AlMundhir said; No; by Allah we wont accept this. But there must be a ruler from us and a ruler from you. Abu Bakr said; No; we will be the rulers and you will be the ministers; for they i.e. Quarish are the best family amongst the Arabs and of best origin. So you should elect either Umar or Abu Ubaida Bin AlJarrah as your ruler. Umar said to Abu Bakr ; No but we elect you; for you are our chief and the best amongst us and the most beloved of all of us to Allah Messenger ﷺ. So Umar took Abu Bakr hand and gave the pledge of allegiance and the people too gave the pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr. Someone said; You have killed Sad Bin Ubada. Umar said; Allah has killed him. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Charity in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on If I were to take Khalil in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3381 | Narrated Uthman: the son of Muhib An Egyptian who came and performed the Hajj to the Kaba saw some people sitting. He enquire; Who are these people? Somebody said; They are the tribe of Quraish. He said; Who is the old man sitting amongst them? The people replied; He is Abdullah Bin Umar. He said; O Ibn Umar! I want to ask you about something; please tell me about it. Do you know that Uthman fled away on the day of the battle of Uhud? Ibn Umar said; Yes. The Egyptian man said; Do you know that Uthman was absent on the day of the battle of Badr and did not join it? Ibn Umar said; Yes. The man said; Do you know that he failed to attend the Ar Ridwan pledge and did not witness it i.e. Hudaibiya pledge of allegiance ? Ibn Umar said; Yes. The man said; Allahu Akbar! Ibn Umar said; Let me explain to you all these three things. As for his flight on the day of Uhud; I testify that Allah has excused him and forgiven him; and as for his absence from the battle of Badr; it was due to the fact that the daughter of Allah Messenger ﷺ was his wife and she was sick then. Allah Messenger ﷺ said to him; You will receive the same reward and share of the booty as anyone of those who participated in the battle of Badr if you stay with her. As for his absence from the AlRidwan pledge of allegiance; had there been any person in Mecca more respectable than Uthman to be sent as a representative. Allah Messenger ﷺ would have sent him instead of him. No doubt; Allah Messenger ﷺ had sent him; and the incident of the AlRidwan pledge of Allegiance happened after Uthman had gone to Mecca. Allah Messenger ﷺ held out his right hand saying; This is Uthman hand. He stroke his other hand with it saying; This pledge of allegiance is on the behalf of Uthman. Then Ibn Umar said to the man; Bear these excuses in mind with you. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And The Battle Of Badr in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The virtues of Uthman Bin Affan in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3755 | Narrated Ubada Bin AlSamit: Who had taken part in the battle of Badr with Allah Messenger ﷺ and had been amongst his companions on the night of AlAqaba Pledge: Allah Messenger ﷺ ; surrounded by a group of his companions said; Come along and give me the pledge of allegiance that you will not worship anything besides Allah; will not steal; will not commit illegal sexual intercourse will not kill your children; will not utter; slander; invented by yourself; and will not disobey me if I order you to do something good. Whoever among you will respect and fulfill this pledge; will be rewarded by Allah. And if one of you commits any of these sins and is punished in this world then that will be his expiation for it; and if one of you commits any of these sins and Allah screens his sin; then his matter; will rest with Allah: If He will; He will punish him and if He will;. He will excuse him. So I gave the pledge of allegiance to him for these conditions. | The Chapter on Fornication And Adultery Punishment And Forgiveness in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The deputation of the Ansar to the Prophet at Makkah and the AlAqaba in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3779 | Narrated Abu Uthman: I heard that Ibn Umar used to become angry if someone mentioned that he had migrated before his father Umar ; and he used to say; Umar and I came to Allah Messenger ﷺ and found him having his midday rest; so we returned home. Then Umar sent me again to the Prophet ﷺ and said; Go and see whether he is awake. I went to him and entered his place and gave him the pledge of allegiance. Then I went back to Umar and informed him that the Prophet ﷺ was awake. So we both went; running slowly; and when Umar entered his place; he gave him the pledge of allegiance and thereafter I too gave him the pledge of allegiance. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Loans in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The emigration of the Prophet to AlMadina in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4024 | Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ said; A prophet amongst the prophets carried out a holy military expedition; so he said to his followers; Anyone who has married a woman and wants to consummate the marriage; and has not done so yet; should not accompany me; nor should a man who has built a house but has not completed its roof; nor a man who has sheep or shecamels and is waiting for the birth of their young ones. So; the prophet carried out the expedition and when he reached that town at the time or nearly at the time of the Asr prayer; he said to the sun; O sun! You are under Allah Order and I am under Allah Order O Allah! Stop it i.e. the sun from setting. It was stopped till Allah made him victorious. Then he collected the booty and the fire came to burn it; but it did not burn it. He said to his men ; Some of you have stolen something from the booty. So one man from every tribe should give me a pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me. They did so and the hand of a man got stuck over the hand of their prophet. Then that prophet said to the man ; The theft has been committed by your people. So all the persons of your tribe should give me the pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me. The hands of two or three men got stuck over the hand of their prophet and he said; You have committed the theft. Then they brought a head of gold like the head of a cow and put it there; and the fire came and consumed the booty. The Prophet ﷺ added: Then Allah saw our weakness and disability; so he made booty legal for us. | The Chapter on Hand Gestures And Bowing in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The statement of the Prophet Booty has been made legal for you Muslims in Sahih AlBukhari

The sub narrator asked Nafi; For what did the Prophet ﷺ take their pledge of allegiance; was it for death? Nafi replied No; but he took their pledge of allegiance for patience. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Charity in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on To give a Baia for not to flee during a battle in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4627 | Narrated Abdullah Bin Zaid: that in the time of the battle of AlHarra a person came to him and said; Ibn Hanzala is taking the pledge of allegiance from the people for death. He said; I will never give a pledge of allegiance for such a thing to anyone after Allah Messenger ﷺ. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Loans in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on To give a Baia for not to flee during a battle in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4628 | Narrated Yazid Bin Ubaid: Salama said; I gave the Pledge of allegiance AlRidwan to Allah Messenger ﷺ and then I moved to the shade of a tree. When the number of people around the Prophet ﷺ diminished; he said; O Ibn AlAkwa ! Will you not give to me the pledge of Allegiance? I replied; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! I have already given to you the pledge of Allegiance. He said; Do it again. So I gave the pledge of allegiance for the second time. I asked O Abu Muslim! For what did you give he pledge of Allegiance on that day? He replied; We gave the pledge of Allegiance for death. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Islam in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on To give a Baia for not to flee during a battle in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4630 | Narrated Mujashi: My brother and I came to the Prophet ﷺ and I requested him to take the pledge of allegiance from us for migration. He said; Migration has passed away with its people. I asked; For what will you take the pledge of allegiance from us then? He said; I will take the pledge for Islam and Jihad. | Chapter on To give a Baia for not to flee during a battle in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4741 | Narrated Abu Uthman AlNahdi: Mujashi bin Masud took his brother Mujalid Bin Musud to the Prophet ﷺ and said; This is Mujalid and he will give a pledge of allegiance to you for migration. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-6415 | Narrated Uthman Bin Mauhab: A man came to perform the Hajj to Allahs House. Seeing some people sitting; he said; Who are these sitting people? Somebody said; They are the people of Quraish. He said; Who is the old man? They said; Ibn Umar. He went to him and said; I want to ask you about something; will you tell me about it? I ask you with the respect due to the sanctity of this Sacred House; do you know that Uthman Bin Affan fled on the day of Uhud? Ibn Umar said; Yes. He said; Do you know that he i.e. Uthman was absent from the Badr battle and did not join it? Ibn Umar said; Yes. He said; Do you know that he failed to be present at the Ridwan Pledge of allegiance i.e. Pledge of allegiance at Hudaibiya and did not witness it? Ibn Umar replied; Yes; He then said; Allahu- Akbar! Ibn Umar said; Come along; I will inform you and explain to you what you have asked. As for the flight of Uthman on the day of Uhud; I testify that Allah forgave him. As regards his absence from the Badr battle ; he was married to the daughter of Allah Messenger ﷺ and she was ill; so the Prophet ﷺ said to him; You will have such reward as a man who has fought the Badr battle will get; and will also have the same share of the booty. As for his absence from the Ridwan Pledge of allegiance if there had been anybody more respected by the Meccans than Uthman Bin Affan; the Prophet would surely have sent that man instead of Uthman. So the Prophet ﷺ sent him i.e. Uthman to Mecca and the Ridwan Pledge of allegiance took place after Uthman had gone to Mecca. The Prophet raised his right hand saying. This is the hand of Uthman; and clapped it over his other hand and said; This is for Uthman. Ibn Umar then said to the man ; Go now; after taking this information. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And The Battle Of Badr in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on But Allah indeed has forgiven them in Sahih AlBukhari

Saeed said; My father said that he was amongst those who had given the Pledge of allegiance to Allah Messenger ﷺ beneath the Tree. He i.e. my father said; When we set out the following year; we forgot the Tree and were unable to recognize it. Then Saeed said perhaps ironically The companions of the Prophet ﷺ could not recognize it; nevertheless; you do recognize it; therefore you have a better knowledge. | The Chapter on Writing Oaths And Pledges in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The Ghazwa of AlHudaibiya in Sahih AlBukhari

SahihAlBukhari-017-001-6530 | Narrated Nafi: The people used to say that Ibn Umar had embraced Islam before Umar. This is not true. What happened is that Umar sent Abdullah to bring his horse from an Ansari man so as to fight on it. At that time the people were giving the Pledge of allegiance to Allah Messenger ﷺ near the Tree; and Umar was not aware of that. So Abdullah bin Umar gave the Pledge of Allegiance to the Prophet and went to take the horse and brought it to Umar. While Umar was putting on the armor to get ready for fighting; Abdullah informed him that the people were giving the Pledge of allegiance to Allah Apostle beneath the Tree. So Umar set out and Abdullah accompanied him till he gave the Pledge of allegiance to Allah Messenger ﷺ ; and it was this event that made people say that Ibn Umar had embraced Islam before Umar. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Islam in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The Ghazwa of AlHudaibiya in Sahih AlBukhari

I have come to you with my brother so that you may take a pledge of allegiance from him for migration. The Prophet ﷺ said; The people of migration i.e. those who migrated to Medina before the Conquest enjoyed the privileges of migration i.e. there is no need for migration anymore. I said to the Prophet; For what will you take his pledge of allegiance? The Prophet ﷺ said; I will take his pledge of allegiance for Islam; Belief; and for Jihad i.e. fighting in Allah Cause. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Loans in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Military Expeditions led by the Prophet AlMaghaazi in Sahih AlBukhari

SahihMuslim-017-001-22039 | Malik AlAshjai reported: We; nine; eight or seven men; were in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: Why dont you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah? -while we had recently pledged allegiance. So we said: Messenger of Allah; we have already pledged allegiance to you. He again said: Why dont you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah? And we said: Messenger of Allah; we have already pledged allegiance to you. He again said: Why dont you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah? We stretched our hands and said: Messenger of Allah. we have already pledged allegiance to you. Now tell on what things should we pledge allegiance to you. He said I You must pledge allegiance that you would worship Allah only and would not associate with Him anything; and observe five prayers; and obey- and he said onething in an undertone -that you would not beg people of anything. And as a consequence of that I saw that some of these people did not ask anyone to pick up the whip for them if it fell down. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Loans in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on 35 in Sahih Muslim |
