Then he came across a well; got down into it; drank of its water and then came out. Meanwhile he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. The man said to himself This dog is suffering from the same state of thirst as I did. So he went down the well again and filled his shoe with water and held it in his mouth and watered the dog. Allah thanked him for that deed and forgave him. The people asked; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals? SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5374 | Narrated Amr: Here i.e. in Mecca there was a man called Nawas and he had camels suffering from the disease of excessive and unquenchable thirst. Ibn Umar went to the partner of Nawas and bought those camels. The man returned to Nawas and told him that he had sold those camels. Nawas asked him; To whom have you sold them? He replied; To such and such Sheikh. Nawas said; Woe to you; By Allah; that Sheikh was Ibn Umar. Nawas then went to Ibn Umar and said to him; My partner sold you camels suffering from the disease of excessive thirst and he had not known you. Ibn Umar told him to take them back. He climbed down into it and drank water and then came out and saw a dog lolling its tongue on account of thirst and eating the moistened earth. The person said: This dog has suffered from thirst as I had suffered from it. He climbed down into the well; filled his shoe with water; then caught it in his mouth until he climbed up and made the dog drink it. So Allah appreciated this act of his and pardoned him. Then the Companions around him said: Allah Messenger; is there for us a reward even for serving such animals? He drank water and came out. Suddenly he saw a dog panting and eating soil due to thirst. The man said to himself This dog must have reached the same condition due to thirst as I had reached. So he went down into the well; filled his sock with water; held it with his mouth and came up. He supplied water to the dog. Allaah appreciated this and forgave him. They asked Apostle of Allaah ﷺ ; Is there any reward for us for these beasts?
