I listened to his recitation and noticed that he recited it in several different ways which Allah Messenger ﷺ had not taught me. So I was about to jump over him during his Prayer prayer but I waited till he finished his Prayer prayer whereupon I put; either his upper garment or my upper garment around his neck and seized him by it and asked him; Who has taught you this Surah? He replied: Allah Messenger ﷺ has taught it to me. I said to him ; You have told a lie! By Allah; Allah Messenger ﷺ has taught me this Surah which I have heard you reciting. So I dragged him to the Allah Messenger ﷺ. I said: O Allah Messenger I have heard this man reciting Surat AlFurqan in a way in which you have not taught me; and you did teach me Surah AlFurqan. On that Allah Messenger ﷺ said; O Umar; release him! Recite; O Hisham. So Hisham recited before him in the way as I heard him reciting. Allah Messenger ﷺ said; It has been revealed like this. Then Allah Messenger ﷺ said; Recite; O Umar So recited it. The Prophet ﷺ said; It has been revealed like this. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3579Narrated Ibn Abbas: I had been eager to ask Umar Bin AlKhattab about the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet regarding whom Allah said If you two wives of the Prophet ﷺ namely Aisha and Hafsa turn in repentance to Allah; your hearts are indeed so inclined to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes. 66.4 till Umar performed the Hajj and I too; performed the Hajj along with him. On the way Umar went Aasi de to answer the call of nature; and I also went Aasi de along with him carrying a tumbler full of water; and when Umar had finished answering the call of nature; I poured water over his hands and he performed the ablution. Then I said to him; O chief of the Believers! Who were the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ regarding whom Allah said: If you two wives of the Prophet turn in repentance to Allah your hearts are indeed so inclined to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes ? 66.4 He said; I am astonished at your question; O Ibn Abbas. They were Aisha and Hafsa. Then Umar went on narrating the Hadith and said; I and an Ansari neighbor of mine from Bani Umaiya Bin Zaid who used to live in Awali AlMedina; used to visit the Prophet ﷺ in turn. He used to go one day and I another day. When I went; I would bring him the news of what had happened that day regarding the Divine Inspiration and other things; and when he went; he used to do the same for me. We; the people of Quraish used to have the upper hand over our wives; but when we came to the Ansar; we found that their women had the upper hand over their men; so our women also started learning the ways of the Ansari women. I shouted at my wife and she retorted against me and I disliked that she should answer me back. She said to me; Why are you so surprised at my answering you back? By Allah; the wives of the Prophet answer him back and some of them may leave does not speak to him throughout the day till the night. The talk scared me and I said to her; Whoever has done so will be ruined! Then I proceeded after dressing myself; and entered upon Hafsa and said to her; Does anyone of you keep the Prophet ﷺ angry till night? She said; Yes. I said; You are a ruined losing person! Dont you fear that Allah may get angry for the anger of Allah Messenger ﷺ and thus you will be ruined? So do not ask more from the Prophet ﷺ and do not answer him back and do not give up talking to him. Ask me whatever you need and do not be tempted to imitate your neighbor i.e.; Aisha in her manners for she is more charming than you and more beloved to the Prophet ﷺ. Umar added;At that time a talk was circulating among us that the tribe of Ghassan were preparing their horses to invade us. My Ansari companion; on the day of his turn; went to the town and returned to us at night and knocked at my door violently and asked if I was there. I became horrified and came out to him. He said; Today a great thing has happened. I asked; What is it? Have the people of Ghassan come? He said; No; but What has happened is greater and more horrifying than that: Allah Messenger ﷺ ; has divorced his wives. Umar added; The Prophet ﷺ kept away from his wives and I said Hafsa is a ruined loser. I had already thought that most probably this divorce would happen in the near future. So I dressed myself and offered the morning prayer with the Prophet ﷺ and then the Prophet; entered an upper room and stayed there in seclusion. I entered upon Hafsa and saw her weeping. I asked; What makes you weep? Did I not warn you about that? Did the Prophet ﷺ divorce you all? She said; I do not know. There he is retired alone in the upper room. I came out and sat near the pulpit and saw a group of people sitting around it and some of them were weeping. I sat with them for a while but could not endure the situation; so I went to the upper room where the Prophet; was and said to a black slave of his; Will you get the permission of the Prophet ﷺ for Umar to enter ? The slave went in; talked to the Prophet ﷺ about it and then returned saying; I have spoken to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned you but he kept quiet. Then I returned and sat with the group of people sitting near the pulpit. but I could not bear the situation and once again I said to the slave; Will you get the permission for Umar? He went in and returned saying; I mentioned you to him but he kept quiet. So I returned again and sat with the group of people sitting near the pulpit; but I could not bear the situation; and so I went to the slave and said; Will you get the permission for Umar? He went in and returned to me saying; I mentioned you to him but he kept quiet. When I was leaving; behold! The slave called me; saying; The Prophet ﷺ has given you permission. Then I entered upon Allah Messenger ﷺ and saw him Lying on a bed made of stalks of date palm leaves and there was no bedding between it and him. The stalks left marks on his side and he was leaning on a leather pillow stuffed with date-palm fires. I greeted him and while still standing I said; O Allah Apostle! Have you divorced your wives? He looked at me and said; No. I said; Allah Akbar! And then; while still standing; I said chatting; Will you heed what I say; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ? We; the people of Quraish used to have power over our women; but when we arrived at Medina we found that the men here were overpowered by their women. The Prophet ﷺ smiled and then I said to him; Will you heed what I say; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ? I entered upon Hafsa and said to her; Do not be tempted to imitate your companion Aisha ; for she is more charming than you and more beloved to the Prophet. The Prophet ﷺ smiled for a second time. When I saw him smiling; I sat down. Then I looked around his house; and by Allah; I could not see anything of importance in his house except three hides; so I said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Invoke Allah to make your followers rich; for the Persians and the Romans have been made prosperous and they have been given the pleasures of the world ; although they do not worship Allah. Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ sat up as he was reclining. and said; Are you of such an opinion; O the son of AlKhattab? These are the people who have received the rewards for their good deeds in this world. I said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Ask Allah to forgive me. Then the Prophet ﷺ kept away from his wives for twenty-nine days because of the story which Hafsa had disclosed to Aisha. The Prophet ﷺ had said; I will not enter upon them my wives for one month; because of his anger towards them; when Allah had admonished him. So; when twenty nine days had passed; the Prophet ﷺ first entered upon Aisha. Aisha said to him; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! You had sworn that you would not enter upon us for one month; but now only twenty-nine days have passed; for I have been counting them one by one. The Prophet ﷺ said; The present month is of twenty nine days. Aisha added; Then Allah revealed the Verses of the option. 2 And out of all his-wives he asked me first; and I chose him. Then he gave option to his other wives and they said what Aisha had said. 1 The Prophet; had decided to abstain from eating a certain kind of food because of a certain event; so Allah blamed him for doing so. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3676Narrated Qais Bin Ubad: While I was sitting in the Masjid of Medina; there entered a man Abdullah Bin Salam with signs of solemnity over his face. The people said; He is one of the people of Paradise. He prayed two light rakat and then left. I followed him and said; When you entered the Masjid; the people said; He is one of the people of Paradise. He said; By Allah; one ought not say what he does not know; and I will tell you why. In the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ I had a dream which I narrated to him. I saw as if I were in a garden. He then described its extension and greenery. He added: In its center there was an iron pillar whose lower end was fixed in the earth and the upper end was in the sky; and at its upper end there was a ring-shaped hand-hold. I was told to climb it. I said; I cant. Then a servant came to me and lifted my clothes from behind and I climbed till I reached the top of the pillar. Then I got hold of the hand-hold; and I was told to hold it tightly; then I woke up and the effect of the handhold was in my hand. I narrated AlI that to the Prophet ﷺ who said; The garden is Islam; and the handhold is the Most Truth-worthy Hand-Hold. So you will remain as a Muslim till you die. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4454Narrated AlNuman Bin Bashir: The Prophet ﷺ said; The example of the person abiding by Allah orders and limits or the one who abides by the limits and regulations prescribed by Allah in comparison to the one who do wrong and violate Allah limits and orders is like the example of people drawing lots for seats in a boat. Some of them got seats in the upper part while the others in the lower part ; those in the; lower part have to pass by those in the upper one to get water; and that troubled the latter. One of them i.e. the people in the lower part took an ax and started making a hole in the bottom of the boat. The people of the upper part came and asked him; saying ; What is wrong with you? He replied; You have been troubled much by my coming up to you ; and I have to get water. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5115Narrated Abdullah Bin Abbas: I had been eager to ask Umar about the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ regarding whom Allah said in the Quran saying : If you two wives of the Prophet ﷺ namely Aisha and Hafsa turn in repentance to Allah your hearts are indeed so inclined to oppose what the Prophet ﷺ likes 66.4 ; till performed the Hajj along with Umar and on our way back from Hajj he went Aasi de to answer the call of nature and I also went Aasi de along with him carrying a tumbler of water. When he had answered the call of nature and returned. I poured water on his hands from the tumbler and he performed ablution. I said; O Chief of the believers! Who were the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ to whom Allah said: If you two return in repentance 66.4 ? He said; I am astonished at your question; O Ibn Abbas. They were Aisha and Hafsa. Then Umar went on relating the narration and said. I and an Ansari neighbor of mine from Bani Umaiya Bin Zaid who used to live in Awali AlMedina; used to visit the Prophet ﷺ in turns. He used to go one day; and I another day. When I went I would bring him the news of what had happened that day regarding the instructions and orders and when he went; he used to do the same for me. We; the people of Quraish; used to have authority over women; but when we came to live with the Ansar; we noticed that the Ansari women had the upper hand over their men; so our women started acquiring the habits of the Ansari women. Once I shouted at my wife and she paid me back in my coin and I disliked that she should answer me back. She said; Why do you take it ill that I retort upon you? By Allah; the wives of the Prophet ﷺ retort upon him; and some of them may not speak with him for the whole day till night. What she said scared me and I said to her; Whoever amongst them does so; will be a great loser. Then I dressed myself and went to Hafsa and asked her; Does any of you keep Allah Messenger ﷺ angry all the day long till night? She replied in the affirmative. I said; She is a ruined losing person and will never have success ! Doesnt she fear that Allah may get angry for the anger of Allah Messenger ﷺ and thus she will be ruined? Dont ask Allah Messenger ﷺ too many things; and dont retort upon him in any case; and dont desert him. Demand from me whatever you like; and dont be tempted to imitate your neighbor i.e. Aisha in her behavior towards the Prophet ; for she i.e. Aisha is more beautiful than you; and more beloved to Allah Messenger ﷺ. In those days it was rumored that Ghassan; a tribe living in Sham was getting prepared their horses to invade us. My companion went to the Prophet ﷺ on the day of his turn; went and returned to us at night and knocked at my door violently; asking whether I was sleeping. I was scared by the hard knocking and came out to him. He said that a great thing had happened. I asked him: What is it? Have Ghassan come? He replied that it was worse and more serious than that; and added that Allah Apostle had divorced all his wives. I said; Hafsa is a ruined loser! I expected that would happen some day. So I dressed myself and offered the Fajr prayer with the Prophet. Then the Prophet ﷺ entered an upper room and stayed there alone. I went to Hafsa and found her weeping. I asked her; Why are you weeping? Didnt I warn you? Have Allah Messenger ﷺ divorced you all? She replied; I dont know. He is there in the upper room. I then went out and came to the pulpit and found a group of people around it and some of them were weeping. Then I sat with them for some time; but could not endure the situation. So I went to the upper room where the Prophet ﷺ was and requested to a black slave of his: Will you get the permission of Allah Apostle for Umar to enter ? The slave went in; talked to the Prophet ﷺ about it and came out saying; I mentioned you to him but he did not reply. So; I went and sat with the people who were sitting by the pulpit; but I could not bear the situation; so I went to the slave again and said: Will you get he permission for Umar? He went in and brought the same reply as before. When I was leaving; behold; the slave called me saying; Allah Messenger ﷺ has granted you permission. So; I entered upon the Prophet and saw him lying on a mat without wedding on it; and the mat had left its mark on the body of the Prophet; and he was leaning on a leather pillow stuffed with palm fires. I greeted him and while still standing; I said: Have you divorced your wives? He raised his eyes to me and replied in the negative. And then while still standing; I said chatting: Will you heed what I say; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! We; the people of Quraish used to have the upper hand over our women wives ; and when we came to the people whose women had the upper hand over them... Umar told the whole story about his wife. On that the Prophet ﷺ smiled. Umar further said; I then said; I went to Hafsa and said to her: Do not be tempted to imitate your companion Aisha for she is more beautiful than you and more beloved to the Prophet. The Prophet ﷺ smiled again. When I saw him smiling; I sat down and cast a glance at the room; and by Allah; I couldnt see anything of importance but three hides. I said to Allah Messenger ﷺ Invoke Allah to make your followers prosperous for the Persians and the Byzantines have been made prosperous and given worldly luxuries; though they do not worship Allah? The Prophet ﷺ was leaning then and on hearing my speech he sat straight and said; O Ibn AlKhattab! Do you have any doubt that the Hereafter is better than this world ? These people have been given rewards of their good deeds in this world only. I asked the Prophet ﷺ. Please ask Allah forgiveness for me. The Prophet ﷺ did not go to his wives because of the secret which Hafsa had disclosed to Aisha; and he said that he would not go to his wives for one month as he was angry with them when Allah admonished him for his oath that he would not approach Maria. When twenty-nine days had passed; the Prophet ﷺ went to Aisha first of all. She said to him; You took an oath that you would not come to us for one month; and today only twenty-nine days have passed; as I have been counting them day by day. The Prophet ﷺ said; The month is also of twenty-nine days. That month consisted of twenty-nine days. Aisha said; When the Divine revelation of Choice was revealed; the Prophet ﷺ started with me; saying to me; I am telling you something; but you need not hurry to give the reply till you can consult your parents. Aisha knew that her parents would not advise her to part with the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah had said: O Prophet! Say To your wives; If you desire The life of this world And its glitter;... then come! I will make a provision for you and set you free In a handsome manner. But if you seek Allah And His Apostle; and The Home of the Hereafter; then Verily; Allah has prepared For the good-doers amongst you A great reward. 33.28 Aisha said; Am I to consult my parents about this? I indeed prefer Allah; His Apostle; and the Home of the Hereafter. SahihMuslim-017-001-20792Kharasha Bin Hurr reported: I was sitting in a circle in the Masjid of Medina and there was an old man; quite handsome. He was Abdullah Bin Salim. He was telling good things to them to the people sitting in that company. As he stood up to depart the people said: He who is desirous of looking at a person from amongst the people of Paradise should see him. I said: By Allah; I will follow him; and would try to know his residence. So I followed him and he walked on until he reached the outskirts of Medina. He then entered his house. I sought permission from him to get in; and he granted me the permission; saying: My nephew; what is the need that has brought you here ? I said to him: As you stood up; I heard people say about you: He who is desirous of seeing a person from among the people of Paradise should look at him. So I became desirous of accompanying you. He Abdullah Bin Salim said: It is Allah Who knows best about the people of Paradise. I would; however; narrate to you as to why they said like it. The story is that while I was asleep one night there came to me a person in the dream who asked me to stand up. So I stood up and he caught hold of my hand and I walked along with him; and; lo; I found some paths on my left and I was about to set out upon them. Thereupon he said to me Do not set yourself on them for these are the paths of the leftists denizens of Hell-fire. Then there were paths leading to the right side; whereupon he said: Set yourself on these paths. We came across a hill and he said to me: Climb up; and I attempted to climb up that I fell upon my buttocks. I made several attempts but failed to succeed. He led until he came to a pillar so high that its upper end touched the sky and its base was in the earth. And there was a handhold at its upper end. He said to me Climb over it. I said: How can I climb upon it; as its upper end touches the sky? He cought hold of my hand and pushed me up and I found myself suspended with the handhold. He then struck the pillar and it fell down; but I remained attached to that handhold until it was morning and the dream was thus over. I came to Allah Apostle ﷺ and narrated it to him. He said: So far as the paths which you saw on your left are concerned; these are paths of the leftists denizens of Hell and the paths which you saw on your right; these are the paths of the rightists the dwellers of Paradise and the mountain represents the destination of the martyrs which you would not be able to attain. SahihMuslim-017-001-21138Aflah; the freed slave of Abu Ayoub Ansiri; reported: Allah Messnger ﷺ had alighted in his house viz. of Abu Ayoub Ansari at the time of his emigration to Medina and he occupied the lower storey; whereas Abu Ayoub Ansari lived in the upper storey. One night; Abu Ayoub Ansari got up and said to himself : How unfortunate it is that we walk above the head of Allah Messenger ﷺ ; so they went Aasi de and spent the night in a nook and then told Allah Apostle ﷺ about it whereupon Allah Apostle ﷺ said: The lower storey is more comfortable for me. but he Abu Ayoub Ansari said: We would not live over the roof under which you live. So Allah Messenger ﷺ shifted to the upper storey; whereas Abu Ayoub Ansari shifted to the lower storey; and he Abu Ayoub Ansari used to prepare food for Allah Apostle ﷺ ; and when it was brought back to him he asked to locate the part; where his fingers had touched the food ; and he followed his fingers on that part where his fingers those of the Holy Prophet had touched it. One day he prepared food which contained garlic; and when it was returned to him he asked to locate the part which the fingers of Allah Apostle ﷺ had touched. It was said to him that he had not eaten the food. He Abd Ayoub Ansari was distressed and went up to him to the Holy Prophet and said: Is it forbidden? But Allah Messenger ﷺ said: No; it is not forbidden ; but I do not like it. and he Abu Ayoub Ansari said: I also do not like what you do not like or which you did not like. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-25244Abdullah Bin Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said when he was on the pulpit speaking of sadaqah and abstention from it and begging : the upper hand is better than the lower one; the upper being the one which bestows and the lower which begs.Abu Dawud said : The version of this tradition narrated by Ayoub from Nafi is disputed. The narrator Abd AlWarith said in his version : The upper hand is the one which abstains from begging; but most of the narrators have narrated from Hammad Bin Zaid from Ayoub the words The upper hand is the one which bestows. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-25985Salamah Bin Kuhail said: Zaid Bin Wahb AlJuhani told us that he was in the army which proceeded to fight with the Khawarij in the company of Ali. Ali then said: O people! I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: there will appear from among my community people who recite the Quran; and your recitation has no comparison with their recitation; and your prayer has no comparison with their prayer; and your fasts have no comparison with their fasts. They will recite the Quran thinking that it is beneficial for them; while it is harmful for them. Their prayer will not pass their collar-bones. They will swerve from Islam as an arrow goes through the animal shot at. If the army that is approaching them knows what reward has been decided for them at the tongue of their Prophet ﷺ ; they would leave other good activities. The sign of that is that among them there will be a man who has an upper arm; but not hand; on his upper arm there will be something like the nipple of a female breast; having white hair thereon. Will you go to Muawiyah and the people of Syria; and leave them behind among your children and property? I swear by Allah; I hope these are the same people; for they shed the blood unlawfully; and attacked the cattle of the people so go on in the name of Allah. Salamah Bin Kuhail said: Zaid Bin Wahb then informed me of all the halting places one by one; saying : Until we passed a bridge. When we fought with each other; Abdullah Bin Wahb AlRasibi; who was the leader of the Khawarij; said to them: Throw away the lances and pull out the swords from their sheaths; for I am afraid they will adjure you as they had adjured on the day of Harura. So they threw away their lances and pulled out their swords; and the people pierced them with their lances. They were killed lying one on the other. On that day only two persons of the partisans of Ali were afflicted. Ali said: Search for the man with the crippled hand. But they could not find him. Then Ali got up himself and went to the people who had been killed and were lying on one another. He said: Take them out. They found him just near the ground. So he shouted: Allah is Most Great! He said: Allah spoke the truth; and His Apostle has conveyed. Ubaidat AlSalmani stood up to him; saying: Commander of the Faithful! Have you heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ? He said: Yes; by him; there is no God but He. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-26320A mash transmitted this tradition saying: If religion were based on opinion; it would be more proper to wipe the under part of the feet than the upper. The Prophet ﷺ wiped over the upper part of his shoes. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-27006Ali said to Ibn Abad : should I not tell you about me and about Fatimah; daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She was dearest to him of his family. When she was with me; she pulled mill-stone which affected her hand; she carried water with the water-bag which affected the upper portion of her chest: She swept the house so much so that her clothes became dusty; and she cooked food by which her clothes became black; and it harmed her. We heard that some slaves had been brought to the prophet ﷺ. I said: if you go to your father and ask him for a servant; that will be sufficient for you. She came to him and found some people talking to him. She felt shy and returned. Next morning he visited us when we were in our quilt. He sat beside her head; and she took her head into the quilt out of shame from her father. He asked: What need had you with me; O family of Muhammad? She kept silence twice. I then said : I swear by Allah; I shall tell you. She pulls the mile-stone which has affected her hand; she carrys water with the water-bag which has affected the upper portion of her chest; she sweeps the house by which her clothes have become dusty; and she cooks food by which her clothes have become black. We were told that some slaves or servants had come to you. So I said to her; ask him for a servant. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-29259Ibn Abud said; Ali said to me May I not narrate you about me and Fathimah daughter of the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ ? She was most favorite to him of his family. I said Yes. He said She pulled the grinding stone with her hand so much that it affected her hand; she carried water in a water bag so much so that it affected the upper portion of her chest; she swept the house so much so that her clothes became dirty. The Prophet ﷺ acquired some slaves. So I said Would that you go to your father and ask him for a slave. She then came to him and found some people with him talking to him. She therefore returned. Next day she came again. He asked her ; what was your need? But she kept silence. So I said; I inform you; Apostle of Allaah ﷺ. She pulled grinding stone so much that it affected her hand; she carried water bag so much so that it affected the upper portion of her chest. When the slaves were brought to you I asked her to come to you and to ask you for a slave to save her from the exertion she is suffering. He said Fear Allaah; Fathimah and perform the duty of your Lord and do the work of your family. When you go to bed say Glory be to Allaah thirty three times; Praise be to Allaah thirty three times; Allaah is Most Great thirty four times. This is hundred times. That will be better for you than a servant. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-29333Narrated Amr Ibn Awuf AlMuzani: The Prophet ﷺ assigned as a fief to Bilal Ibn AlMuzani the mines of AlQabaliyah both which lay on the upper side and which lay on the lower side; and the land which was suitable for cultivation at Quds. He did not give him the land which involved the right of a Muslim. The Prophet ﷺ wrote a document for him. It goes: In the name of Allah; the Compassionate; the Merciful. This is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ assigned to Bilal Ibn Harith AlMuzani. He gave him the mines of AlQabaliyah; both which lay on the upper side and which lay on the lower side; and the land which is suitable for cultivation at Quds. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-29334Narrated Amr Ibn Awuf AlMuzani: The Prophet ﷺ assigned as a fief to Bilal Ibn Harith AlMuzani the mines of AlQabaliyah; both those which lay on the upper side those and which lay on the lower side. The narrator; Ibn AlNadr; added: also Jars and Dhat AlNusub. The agreed version reads: and the land which is suitable for cultivation at Quds. He did not assign to Bilal Ibn AlHarith the right of any Muslim. The Prophet ﷺ wrote a document to him: This is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ assigned to Bilal Ibn AlHarith AlMuzani. He gave him the mines of AlQabaliyah both those which lay on the upper and lower side; and that which is fit for cultivation at Quds. He did not give him the right of any Muslim. The narrator Abu Uways said: A similar tradition has been transmitted to me by Thawr Ibn Zayd from Ikrimah on the authority of Ibn Abbas from the Prophet ﷺ.
