What about the meaning of the Statement of Allah; Verily! the mountains AlSafa and AlMarwa; are among the symbols of Allah. So; it is not harmful if those who perform Hajj or Umra of the House Kaba at Mecca to perform the going Tawaf between them? 2.158 I understand from that that there is no harm if somebody does not perform the Tawaf between them. Aisha replied; No; for if it were as you are saying; then the recitation would have been like this: It is not harmful not to perform Tawaf between them. This verse was revealed in connection with the Ansar who used to assume the Ihram for the idol Manat which was put beside a place called Qudaid and those people thought it not right to perform the Tawaf of AlSafa and AlMarwa. When Islam came; they asked Allah Messenger ﷺ about that; and Allah revealed:- Verily! the mountains AlSafa and AlMarwa Are among the symbols of Allah. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5588Narrated Abu Mousa AlAshari: I came to the Prophet ﷺ at AlBatha while his camel was kneeling down and he asked me; Have you intended to perform the Hajj? I replied in the affirmative. He asked me; With what intention have you assumed Ihram? I replied; I have assumed Ihram with the same intention as that of the Prophet. He said; You have done well. Perform the Tawaf of the Kaba and the Sai between AlSafa and AlMarwa and then finish the Ihram. So; I performed the Tawaf around the Kaba and the Sai between AlSafa and AlMarwa and then went to a woman of the tribe of Qais who cleaned my head from lice. Later I assumed the Ihram for Hajj. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-5776Narrated Urwa: I asked Aisha : How do you interpret the statement of Allah;. : Verily! the mountains AlSafa and AlMarwa are among the symbols of Allah; and whoever performs the Hajj to the Kaba or performs Umra; it is not harmful for him to perform Tawaf between them Safa and Marwa. 2.158. By Allah! it is evident from this revelation there is no harm if one does not perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. Aisha said; O; my nephew! Your interpretation is not true. Had this interpretation of yours been correct; the statement of Allah should have been; It is not harmful for him if he does not perform Tawaf between them. But in fact; this divine inspiration was revealed concerning the Ansar who used to assume lhram for worship ping an idol called Manat which they used to worship at a place called AlMushallal before they embraced Islam; and whoever assumed Ihram for the idol ; would consider it not right to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. When they embraced Islam; they asked Allah Messenger ﷺ ﷺ regarding it; saying; O Allah Apostle! We used to refrain from Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. So Allah revealed: Verily; the mountains AlSafa and AlMarwa are among the symbols of Allah. Aisha added; Surely; Allah Apostle set the tradition of Tawaf between Safa and Marwa; so nobody is allowed to omit the Tawaf between them. Later on I Urwa told Abu Bakr Bin Abdulrahman of Aisha narration and he said; I have not heard of such information; but I heard learned men saying that all the people; except those whom Aisha mentioned and who used to assume lhram for the sake of Manat; used to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. When Allah referred to the Tawaf of the Kaba and did not mention Safa and Marwa in the Quran; the people asked; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! We used to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa and Allah has revealed the verses concerning Tawaf of the Kaba and has not mentioned Safa and Marwa. Is there any harm if we perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa? So Allah revealed: Verily AlSafa and AlMarwa are among the symbols of Allah. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-7174Narrated Urwa: I asked Aisha regarding the Sai between As Safa and AlMarwa. SahihMuslim-017-001-18088It has been narrated on the authority of Abdullah Bin Rabah who said: We came to Muawiya Bin Abu Sufyan as a deputation and Abu Huraira was among us. Each of us would prepare food for his companions turn by turn for a day. Accordingly when it was my turn I said: Abu Huraira; it is my turn today. So they came to my place. The food was not yet ready; so I said to Abu Huraira: I wish you could narrate to us a tradition from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until the food was ready. Complying with my request Abu Huraira said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of the Conquest of Mecca. He appointed Khalid Bin Walid as commander of the right flank; AlZubair as commander of the left flank; and Abu Ubaida as commander of the foot-soldiers who were to advance to the interior of the valley. He then said: Abu Huraira; call the Ansar to me. So I called out to them and they came hurriedly. He said: O ye Assembly of the Ansaar; do you see the ruffians of the Quraish? They said: Yes. He said: See; when you meet them tomorrow; wipe them out. He hinted at this with his hand; placing his right hand on his left and said: You will meet us at AlSafa. Abu Huraira continued : Whoever was seen by them that day was put to death. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the mount of AlSafa. The Ansar also came there and surrounded the mount. Then came Abu Sufyan and said: Messenger ot Allah; the Quraish have perished. No member of the Quraish tribe will survive this day. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Who enters the house of Abu Safyin will be safe; who lays down arms will be safe; who locks his door will be safe. some of the Ansar said: After all the man has been swayed by tenderness towards his family and love for his city. At this; Divine inspiration descended upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: You were saying that the man has been swayed by tenderness towards his family and love for his city. Do you know what my name is? I am Muhammad; the bondman of God and His Messenger. He repeated this thrice. I left my native place for the take of Allah and joined you. So I will live with you and die with you. Now the Ansar said: By God; we said that only out of our greed for Allah and His Messenger. SahihMuslim-017-001-22827Aisha Allah be pleased with her said: We went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage. We entered into the state of Ihram for Umra. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Who has the sacrificial animal with him; he should put on Ihram for Hajj along with Umra. and should not put it off till he has completed them both Hajj and Umra. She said: When I came to Mecca. I was having menses; I neither circumambulated the House; nor ran between AlSafa and AlMarwa. I complained about it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: Undo your hair; comb it; and pronounce Talbiya for Hajj; and give up Umra for the time being ; which I did. When we had performed the Hajj; the Messenger of Allah way peace he upon him sent me with Abd AlRabman Bin Abu Bakr to Tanim saying: This is the place for your Umra. Those who had put on Ihram for Umra circumambulated the House; and ran between Alsafa and AlMarwa. SahihMuslim-017-001-22857Jabir Allah be pleased with him said.: We went with Allah Messenger ﷺ in a state of Ihram for the Hajj. There were women and children with us. When we reached Mecca we circumambulated the House and ran between AlSafa and AlMarwa. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He who has no sacrificial animal with him should put off lhram. We said: What kind of putting off? He said: Getting out of lhram completely. So we came to our wives; and put on our clothes and applied perfume. When it was the day of Tarwiya; we put on Ihram for Hajj. and the first circumambulation and running between AlSafa and AlMarwa sufficed us.. SahihMuslim-017-001-22874Abu Mousa Allah be pleased with him said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as he was encamping at Batha. He said to me: Did you intend to perform Hajj? I said: Yes. He again said: With what intention have you entered into the state of Ihram for Ifrad; Qiran or Tamattu. I said: I pronounced Talbiya I have entered into the state of Ihram with that very aim with which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is pronouncing Talbiya. He the Holy Prophet said; You have done well. Then circumambulate the House and run between AlSafa and AlMarwa and put off Ihram as you have not brought the sacrificial animals along with you. So I circumambulated the House; and ran between AlSafa and AlMarwa and then came to a woman of the tribe of Qais and she rid my head of the lice. I again put on Ihram for Hajj. and continued giving religious verdict according to this practice till during the Caliphate of Umar Allah be pleased with him when a person said to him: Abu Mousa; or Abdullah Bin Qais; exercise restraint in delivering some religious verdict of yours; for you do not know what has been introduced after you by the Commander of the Believers in the rites of Hajj. Thereupon he said: 0 people; whom we gave the religious verdict concerning putting off Ihram they should wait; for the Commander of the Believers is about to come to you; and you should follow him. Umar Allah be pleased with him then came and I made a mention of it to him. whereupon he said: If we abide by the Book of Allah we find the Book of Allah has commanded us to complete the. And it was during the Hajj season that a person came to me and said: You perhaps do not know what the Commander of the Believers has introduced in the rites of Hajj. I said: 0 people; those whom we have given religious verdict about a certain thing should wait; for the Commander of the Believers is about to arrive among you; so follow him. When the Commander of the Believers arrived; I said: What is this that you have introduced in the rites of Hajj ? -where upon he said: If we abide by the Book of Allah we find that there Allah; Exalted and Majestic; has said: Complete Hajj and Umra for Allah. SahihMuslim-017-001-22898Abdullah Bin Umar Allah be pleased with them reported: Allah Messenger ﷺ observed Tamattu in Hajjat AlWada. He first put on Ihram for Umra and then for Hajj. and then offered animal sacrifice. So he drove the sacrificial animals with him from Dhu AlHulaifa. Allah Messenger ﷺ commenced Ihram of Umra and thus pronounced Talbiya for Umra. and then put on Ihram for Hajj and pronounced Talbiya for Hajj. And the people performed Tamattu in the company of Allah Messenger ﷺ. They put on Ihram for Umra first and then for Hajj. Some of them had sacrificial animals which they had brought with them; whereas some of them had none to sacrifice. So when Allah Messenger ﷺ came to Mecca; he said to the people: He who amongst you has brought sacrificial animals along with him must not treat as lawful anything which has become unlawful for him till he has completed the Hajj; and he; who amongst you has not brought the sacrificial animals should circumambulate the House; and run between AlSafa and AlMarwa and clip his hair and put off the Ihram; and then again put on the Ihram for Hajj and offer sacrifice of animals. But he who does not find the sacrificial animal; he should observe fast for three days during the Hajj and for seven days when he returns to his family. Allah Messenger ﷺ circumambulated the House when he came to Mecca: he first kissed the corner of the Kaba containing the Black Stone ; then ran in three circuits out of seven and walked in four circuits. And then when he had finished the circumambulation of the House he observed two rakahs of prayer at the Station of Ibrahim ; and then pronounced Salaam for concluding the rakahs ; and departed and came to AlSafa and ran seven times between AlSafa and AlMarwa. After that he did not treat anything as lawful which had become unlawful till he had completed his Hajj and sacrificed his animal on the day of sacrifice 10th of Dhu AlHijja. and then went back quickly to Mecca and performed circumambulation of the House known as tawaf ifada after which all that was unlawful for him became lawful; and those who had brought the sacrificial animals along with them did as Allah Messenger ﷺ had doneThe Chapter on Hajj Altamattu in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on 24 in Sahih Muslim
SahihMuslim-017-001-22915Amr Bin Dinar said: We asked Ibn Umar about a person who came for Umra and circumambulated the House; but he did not run between AlSafa and AlMarwa; whether he is allowed to put off Ihram and have intercourse with his wife. SahihMuslim-017-001-22994Hisham Bin Urwa narrated on the authority of his father who reported: I said to Aisha: I do not see any harm to me if I do not circumambulate betweez AlSafa and AlMarwa. She said: On what ground do you say so? I said: Since Allah; the Exalted and Majestic; says: Verily AlSafa and AlMarwa are among the Signs of Allah. It your assertion were correct ; it would have been said like this: There is no harm for him; that he should not circumambulate between them. It this verse has been revealed about the people of Ansar. Whenever they pronounced the Talbiya; they pronounced it in the name of AlManat during the Days of Ignorance; so they thought that it was not permissible for them for the Muslims to circumambulate between and AlMarwa. When they the Muslims came with Allah Apostle may peace he upon him for Hajj; they mentioned it to him. So Allah; the Exalted and Majestic; revealed this verse. SahihMuslim-017-001-22995Urwa Bin Zabair reported: I said to Aisha; the wife of Allah Apostle ﷺ : I do not see any fault in one who does not circumambl te between AlSafa and AlMarwa; and I do not mind if I do not circumambulate between them; whereupon she said: O; the son of my sister; what you say is wrong. Allah Messenger ﷺ observed Sai and so did the Muslims. So it is a Sunnah of the Prophet. And it was a common practice with the pagan Arabs that those who pronounced Talbiya for the wretched AlManat; situated at Mushalla; did not observe Sai between AlSafa and AlMarwa. With the advent of Islam; we asked Allah Apostle ﷺ about this practice; and it was on this occasion that Allah; the Exalted and Majestic; revealed this verse: Verily AlSafa and AlMarwa are among the Signs of Allah ; so he who performed Hajj or Umra it is no sin on him if he circumambulates them. And if it were as you state; then the wording would have been : There is no harm for him; that he should not circumambulate round them. Zuhri said: I made a mention of that to Abu Bakr Bin Abdulrahman Bin AlHarith Bin Hisham; he was impressed by that and said: This is what is called knowledge. And I have heard many a scholar saying: Many of the Arabs who did not circumambulate between AlSafa and AlMarwa caid: Our circumambulation between these two hills is an act of ignorance; whereas others among the Ansar said: We have been commanded to circumambulate the House; and not Commanded to run between AlSafa and AlMarwa. So Allah; the Exalted and Majestic; revealed thia verse: Verily AlSafa and AlMarwa are among the Signs of Allah. Then Allah; the Exalted and Majestic; revealed this verse: Verily AlSafa and AlMarwa are among the Signs of. Aisha Allah be pleased with her said: Allah Messenger ﷺ laid down this Sai between them as Sunnah of the Holy Prophet. SunanAlTermithi-017-001-9842Narrated AlZuhri: that Urqah said: I said to Aisha: I do not see anything wrong if someone does not go between AlSafa and AlMarwah; nor any harm if I do not go between them. She said: How horrible is what you have said O my nephew! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would go between them; and the Muslims go between them. It was only that the people who assumed Ihram in the name of the false deity Mannah; which was in AlMushallal; would not go between AlSafa and AlMarwah. So; Allah Blessed and Most High revealed: So it is not a sin for those who perform Hajj or go Umrah to the House to go between them 2:158. And if it were as you say; then it would be: Then there is no harm on him if he does not go between them. AlZuhri said: I mentioned that to Abu Bakr Bin Abdulrahman Bin AlHarith Bin Hisham. He was surprised at that and he said: Indeed this is knowledge. I had heard some men among the people of knowledge saying that those Arabs who would not go between AlSafa and AlMarwah said; that going between these two rocks is a matter from Aljahiliyah. SunanAlNasai-017-001-15880It was narrated from Salim Bin Abdullah that Abdullah Bin Umar said;during the Farewell Pilgrimage; the Messenger of Allah benefited from performing Umrah and then Hajj; and he brought a Hadi sacrificial animal with him from dh AlHulaifah. The Messenger of Allah entered Ihram for Umrah frist; them for Hajj; and the people also benefited by entering Ihram for Umrah first; then for Hajj. Some of the people brought the Hadi and carried it along with them; and other s did not. When the Messenger of Allah came to Makkah; he said to the people: Whoever among you has brought a Hadi; nothing is permissible for him that became forbidden when he entered Ihram; until he has finished his Hajj; Whoever did not find a Hadi; let him fast for three days during the Hajj; and for seven when he returns to his family; the Messenger of Allah performed Tawaf when he came to Makkah and touched the corner where the Black Stone is first of all; then he walked rapidly during the first three of the seven circles; and walked daring the last four. After he finished circumambulating the House he prayed two Rakahs at Maqam Ibrahim. Then he went to AlSafa and walked seven rounds between AlSafa and AlMarwah. And he did not do any action that was forbidden because of Ihram until he had completed his Hajj and slaughtered his Hadi on the Day of sacrifice. Then he hastened onward toard Makkah and circumambulated the House. Then everything that had been forbidden because of Ihram became permissible. I said: I have entered Ihram for that for which the Proper had entered Ihram; He said: Have you brought a hadi sacrifical animal ? I said: No. He said: Then circumambulate the House and perform Sa between AlSafa and AlMarwah; then exit Ihram; so I circumambulated the House and performed Sa i between AlSafa and AlMarwah; then went to a woman of my people and she combed and washed my hair; I used to issue Fatwas to the people based on that; during the Khilafah of Abu Bakr and Umar. Then one day during Hajj season a man came to me and said: You do not know what the commander of the Believers has introduced concerning the rites. I said: O people; whoever heard our heard our Fatwa; let him not rush to follow it; for the commander of the Believers! Is coming to you; and you should follow him. When he came; I said: O Commander of the Believers! What is this that you have introduced concerning the rites? He said: If we follow the Book of Allah; then Allah; the Mighty and Sublime; says: And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah. Then; whe we were in Sarif her menses started. When we came; we circumambulated the Kabah and performed Sai between AlSafa and AlMarwah. Then; the Messenger of Allah commanded those of us who did not have a Hadi to exit Ihram. We said: Exit Ihram to what degree? He said Completely. So we had intercourse with out; wives put on perfume; and wore only four nights away from Arafat. The; we entered Ihram on the day of AlTarwiyah. The Messenger of Allah entered upon Aisha and found here weeping. He said: What is the matter with you? She said: I have got my menses and the people exited Ihram; but I did not exit Ihram or did I circumambulate the House; and the people are going for Hajj now. He said: This is something that Allah ahs decreed for the daughters of Adam. Perform Ghusl; then begin the Talbiyah for Hajj. So she did that and did all the rituals. Then; when she became pure; she circumambulated the House and Performed Sai between AlSafa and AlMarwah. Then; he said: You have exited Ihram from your Hajj and your Umrah at the same time. She said: O Messenger of Allah; I feel upset because I only circumambulated the House during my Hajj. He said: Take here; O Abdullah; to perform Umrah from AlTanim. I came to Makkah and I had my menses; so I did not circumambulate the House or Perform Sai between AlSafa and AlMarwah. I complained about that to the Messenger of Allah and he said: Undo your hair; and comb it; and enter Ihram for Hajj; and leave Umrah. When I had completed Hajj; the Messenger of Allah sent me with Abdulrahman Bin Abi Bakr to AlTanim; and I performed Umrah. He said: This is the place of your Umrah. Then those who had entered Ihram for Umar circumambulated the House and performed Sai between AlSafa and AlMarwah. Then they exited Ihram; then they performed Tawaf again; after they came back from Mina for their Hajj. Aisha said: What a bad thing you said; O son of my brother! If this Ayah was as you have interpreted it; there would be no sin on a person if he did not go between them. But it was revealed concering the Ansar. Before they accepted Islam; they sued to enter Ihram for the false goddess Manat whom they used to worship at AlMushallal. Whoever enter Ihram for her would refrain from going between AlSafa and AlMarwah. When they asked the Messenger of Allah about that; Allah; the Might and Sublime; revealed: Verily AlSafa and AlMarwah Two mountains in Makkah are of the Symbols of Allah. So it is not a sin on him who performs Hajj or Urmrah Pilgrimage of the House the Kabah at Makkah to perform the going Tawaf between them As-Safa and AlMarwah. The Apostel of Allah SWAS said those who have brought the sacrificial animals with them should raise their voices in talbiyah for Hajj along with an Umrah and they should not put off their Ihram till they do so after performing them both. I came to Makkah while I was menstruating and I did not go round the House the Kabah or run between AlSafa and AlMarwah. I complained about this to the Messenger of Allah SWAS he said: Undo your hair; comb it and raise your voice in talbiyah for Hajj and let Umrah go. She said I did so. When we performed Hajj; the Messenger of Allah SWAS sent me along with Abdulrahman Bin Abu Bakr to AlTanim and I performed Umrah. He said; this is Umrah in place of the one you had missed. She said those who had raised their voices in talbiyah for Umrah put off Ihram after circumambulating the House the Kabah and after running between AlSafa and AlMarwa. When she reached Sarif; she menstruated. When we came to Makkah we circumambulated the Kabah and ran between AlSafa and AlMarwah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then commanded us that those who had not brought sacrificial animals withthem should put off their ihram after Umrah. We asked Which acts are lawful and which not ? He replied All acts are lawful that are permissible usually. We had therefore intercourse with our wives; used perfumes; put on our clothes. There remained only four days to perform Hajj at Arafat. We then raised our voice in talbiyah wearing Ihram for Hajj on the eighth of Dhu AlHijja. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon Aisha and found her weeping. He said What is the matter with you? My problem is that I have menstruated; while the people have put on their ihram but I have not done so; nor did I go round the House the Kabah. Now the people are proceeding for Hajj. He said This is a thing destined by Allah to the daughters of Adam. Take a bath; then raise your voice in talbiyah for Hajj i.e; wear ihram for Hajj. She took a abtah and performed all the rites of the Hajj lit. she stayed at all those places where the pilgrims stay. When she was purified; she circumambulated the House the Kabah ; and ran between AlSafa and AlMarwah. He the Prophet said Now you have performed both your Hajj and your Umrah. She said Messenger of Allah; I have some misgiving in my mind that I did not go round the Kabah when I performed Hajj in the beginning. He said Abdulrahman her brother ; take her and have her perform Umrah from AlTanim. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ first raised his voice in talbiyah for Umrah and afterwards he did so for Hajj; and the people along with the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ did it first for Umrah and afterwards for Hajj. Some of the people had brought sacrificial animals and others had not; so when the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ came to Makkah ; he said to the people. Those of you who have brought sacrificial animals must not treat as lawful anything which has become unlawful for you till you complete your Hajj; but those of you who have not brought sacrificial animals should go round the House Kabah and run between AlSafa and AlMarwah; clip their hair; put off ihram; and afterwards raise their voice in talbiyah for Hajj and bring sacrificial animals. Those who cannot get sacrificial animals should fast three days during Hajj and seven days when they return to their families. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ then performed circumambulation when he came to Makkah first touching the corner then running during three circuits out of seven and walking during four and when he had finished his circumambulation of the House Kabah he prayed two rakahs at Maqam Ibrahim; then giving the salutation and departing he went to AlSafa and ran seven times between AlSafa and AlMarwah. After that he did not treat anything as lawful which had become unlawful for him till he had completed his Hajj; sacrificed his animals on the day of sacrifice; went quickly and performed the circumambulation of the House the Kabah ; after which all that had been unlawful became lawful for him. The Mountains AlSafa and AlMarwah are among the indications of Allaah. I think there is no harm for anyone if he does not run between them. Aisha may Allah be pleased with her said Nay; had it been so as you said; it would have been thus. It is no sin on him not to go around them. This verse was revealed about the Ansaar; they used to perform hajj for Manat. Manat was erected in front of Qudaid. Hence they used to avoid going around AlSafa and AlMarwah. When Islam came; they asked the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ about it. Allaah; the Exalted therefore revealed the verse Lo!
