I listened to his recitation and noticed that he recited it in several different ways which Allah Messenger ﷺ had not taught me. So I was about to jump over him during his Prayer prayer but I waited till he finished his Prayer prayer whereupon I put; either his upper garment or my upper garment around his neck and seized him by it and asked him; Who has taught you this Surah? He replied: Allah Messenger ﷺ has taught it to me. I said to him ; You have told a lie! By Allah; Allah Messenger ﷺ has taught me this Surah which I have heard you reciting. So I dragged him to the Allah Messenger ﷺ. I said: O Allah Messenger I have heard this man reciting Surat AlFurqan in a way in which you have not taught me; and you did teach me Surah AlFurqan. On that Allah Messenger ﷺ said; O Umar; release him! Recite; O Hisham. So Hisham recited before him in the way as I heard him reciting. Allah Messenger ﷺ said; It has been revealed like this. Then Allah Messenger ﷺ said; Recite; O Umar So recited it. The Prophet ﷺ said; It has been revealed like this. So I was on the point of attacking him in the prayer; but I waited till he finished his prayer; and then I seized him by the collar and said; Who taught you this Surah which I have heard you reciting? He replied; Allah Messenger ﷺ taught it to me. I said; You are telling a lie; By Allah! Allah Messenger ﷺ taught me in a different way this very Surah which I have heard you reciting. So I took him; leading him to Allah Messenger ﷺ and said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! I heard this person reciting Surat AlFurqan in a way that you did not teach me; and you have taught me Surat AlFurqan. The Prophet said; O Hisham; recite! So he recited in the same way as I heard him recite it before. On that Allah Messenger ﷺ said; It was revealed to be recited in this way. | SahihAlBukhari-017-001-742 | Anas said: One of the Ansar used to lead the Ansar in Prayer in the Quba Masjid and it was his habit to recite Qul Huwal-lahu Ahad whenever he wanted to recite something in Prayer. When he finished that Surah; he would recite another one with it. He followed the same procedure in each Raka. His companions discussed this with him and said; You recite this Surah and do not consider it sufficient and then you recite another. So would you recite it alone or leave it and recite some other. He said; I will never leave it and if you want me to be your Imam on this condition then it is all right ; otherwise I will leave you. They knew that he was the best amongst them and they did not like someone else to lead them in Prayer. When the Prophet ﷺ went to them as usual; they informed him about it. The Prophet ﷺ addressed him and said; O so-and-so; what forbids you from doing what your companions ask you to do ? Why do you read this Surah particularly in every Raka ? He repiled; I love this Surah. | SahihMuslim-017-001-22055 | Abu Harb Bin Abu AlAswad reported on the authority of his father that Abu Mousa AlAshari sent for the reciters of Basra. They came to him and they were three hundred in number. They recited the Quran and he said: You are the best among the inhabitants of Basra; for you are the reciters among them. So continue to recite it. But bear in mind that your reciting for a long time may not harden your hearts as were hardened the hearts of those before you. We used to recite a surah which resembled in length and severity to Surah Baraat. I have; however; forgotten it with the exception of this which I remember out of it: If there were two valleys full of riches; for the son of Adam; he would long for a third valley; and nothing would fill the stomach of the son of Adam but dust. One night he said the night prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He then came to his people and led them in prayer beginning with Surat AlBaqara. A man turned Aasi de; pronounced the taslim salutation for concluding the prayer ; then prayed alone and departed. The people said to him: Have you become a hypocrite; so and so? He said: I swear by Allah that I have not; but I will certainly go to Allah Messenger ﷺ and will inform him about this. He then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah; we look after camels used for watering and work by day. Muadh said the night prayer with you. | SahihMuslim-017-001-23799 | Saad Bin Hisham Bin Amir decided to participate in the expedition for the sake of Allah; so he came to Medina and he decided to dispose of his property there and buy arms and horses instead and fight against the Romans to the end of his life. When he came to Medina; he met the people of Medina. They dissuaded him to do such a thing; and informed him that a group of six men had decided to do so during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them to do it; and said: Is there not for you a model pattern in me? And when they narrated this to him Saad Bin Hisham ; he returned to his wife; though he had divorced her and made people witness to his reconciliation. He then came to Ibn Abbas and asked him about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ibn Abbas said: Should I not lead you to one who knows best amongst the people of the world about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ? He said: Who is it? He Ibn Abbas said: It is Aisha. So go to her and ask her about Witr and then come to me and inform me about her answer that she would give you. So I came to Hakim Bin Aflah and requested him to take me to her. He said: I would not go to her; for I forbade her to speak anything about the conflict between the two groupS; but she refused to accept my advice and went to participate in that corflict. I requested him Hakim with an oath to lead me to her. So we went to Aisha and we begged permission to meet her. She granted us permission and we went in. She said: Are you Hakim? She recognised him. He replied: Yes. She said: Who is there with you? He said: He is Saad Bin Hisham. She said: Which Hisham? He said: He is Hisham Bin Amir. She blessed him Amir with mercy from Allah and spoke good of him Qatada said that he died as a martyr in Uhud. I said: Mother of the Faithful; tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: Dont you read the Quran? I said: Yes. Upon this she said: The character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the Quran. He said: I felt inclined to get up and not ask anything further till death. But then I changed my mind and said: Inform me about the observance of the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: Did you not recite: O thou wrapped up? He said: Yes. She said: Allah; the Exalted and the Glorious; made the observance of the night prayer at the beginning of this Surah obligatory. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions around him observed this night prayer for one year. Allah held back the concluding portion of this Surah for twelve months in the Heaven till at the end of this period Allah revealed the concluding verses of this Surah which lightened the burden of this prayer ; and the night prayer became a supererogatory prayer after being an obligatory one. I said: Mother of the Faithful; inform me about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: I used to prepare tooth stick for him and water for his ablution; and Allah would rouse him to the extent He wished during the night. He would use the tooth stick; and perform ablution; and would offer nine rakahs; and would not sit but in the eighth one and would remember Allah; and praise Him and supplicate Him; then he would get up without uttering the salutation and pray the ninth rakah. He would then sit; remember; praise Him and supplicate Him and then utter a salutation loud enough for us to hear. He would then pray two rakahs sitting after uttering the salutation; and that made eleven rakahs. O my son; but when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew old and put on flesh; he observed Witr of seven; doing in the two rakahs as he had done formerly; and that made nine. O my son; and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed prayer; he liked to keep on observing it; and when sleep or pain overpowered him and made it impossible for him to observe prayer in the night; he prayed twelve rakahs daring the day. I am not aware of Allah Prophet ﷺ having recited the whole Quran during one single night; or praying through the night till morning; or fasting a complete month; except Ramadan. He the narrator said: I then went to Ibn Abbas and narrated to him the hadith transmitted from her ; and he said: She says the truth If I went to her and got into her presence; I would have listened to it orally from her. He said: If I were to know that you do not go to her. I thought that he would bow at the end of one hundred verses; but he proceeded on; I then thought that he would perhaps recite the whole surah in a rakah; but he proceeded and I thought he would perhaps bow on completing this surah. He then started AlNisa; and recited it; he then started Ali-Imran and recited leisurely. And when he recited the verses which referred to the Glory of Allah; he glorified by saying Subhan Allah-Glory to my Lord the Great ; and when he recited the verses which tell how the Lord is to be begged; he the Holy Prophet would then beg from Him ; and when he recited the verses dealing with protection from the Lord; he sought His protection and would then bow and say: Glory be to my Mighty Lord; his bowing lasted about the same length of time as his standing and then on returning to the standing posture after ruku he would say: Allah listened to him who praised Him; and he would then stand about the same length of time as he had spent in bowing. He would then prostrate himself and say: Glory be to my Lord most High; and his prostration lasted nearly the same length of time as his standing. So we went in and we found Abdullah Bin Masud sitting and glorifying Allah i. e. he was busy in dhikr and he said: What obstructed you from coming in though you had been granted permission for it? We said: There was nothing behind it but we entertained the idea that some inmate of the house might be sleeping. He said: Do you presume any idleness on the part of the family of Ibn Umm Abd the mother of Abdullah Bin Masud ? He was again busy with the glorification of Allah till he thought that the sun had risen. He said: Girl; see whether the sun has arisen. She glanced but it had not risen by that time. He was again busy with the glorification of Allah and he again thought that the sun had arisen. She glanced and confirmed that; it had risen. Upon this he Abdullah Bin Masud said: Praise be to Allah Who did not call us to account for our sins today. Mahdi said: I think that he said; He did not destroy us for our sins. One among the people said: I recited all the mufassal surahs during the night. Abdullah said: You must have recited them like the recitation of poetry. I heard the Holy Prophet combining the sarahs and I remember the combinations which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made In the recitation of surahs. His companions talked to him and said: You recite this Surah. You should either recite it or leave it and recite another Surah. He said: I shall not leave it; if you would like me to lead you with it then I shall do so; and if you do not like it then I shall leave you. Now AlAnfal was among the first of those revealed in AlMadinah; and Baraah among the last of those revealed of the Quran; and its narrations those of Baraah resembled its narrations those of AlAnfal ; so we thought that it was part of it. So go to her and ask her about witr and then come back to me and tell me the answer that she gives you. So I went to Hakim Bin Aflah and asked him to go accompany me to her. He said: I shall not go to her; for I told her not to say anything about these two conflicting groups; but she refused to accept my advice and went on to participate in the conflict. I swore an oath; beseeching him to take me to her. So he came with me and went unto her. She said to Hakim: Who is this with you? He said: He is Saad Bin Hisham. She said: Which Hisham? He said: Ibn Amir. She supplicated for mercy for him and said: What a good man Amir was. He said: O Mother of the Believers; tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah. She said: Dont you read the Quran? I said: Yes. She said The character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the Quran. He said: I wanted to get up and leave ; then I thought of the Qiyam night prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Tell me about the Qiyam of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: Do you not recite this surah: O you wrapped in garments? I said: Yes. She said: Allah; the Mighty and Sublime; made Qiyam AlLail obligatory at the beginning of this surah; so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions prayed Qiyam AlLail for one year. Allah SWT withheld the latter part of this surah for twelve months; then he revealed the lessening of this duty at the end of this surah; so Qiyam AlLail became voluntary after it had been obligatory. I felt inclined to stand up and not ask anything further ; then I thought of the witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: O Mother of the Believers; tell me about the witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: We used to prepare his siwak and water for his ablution; and Allah SWT would wake him when He wished during the night. He would use the siwak; perform ablution; and then pray eight rakahs in which he would not sit until he reached the eighth one. Then he would sit and remember Allah SWT and supplicate; then he would say the taslim that we could hear. Then he would pray two rakas sitting after uttering the taslim; then he would pray one rakah; and that made eleven rakahs; O my son! When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew older and put on weight; he prayed witr with seven rakahs; then he prayed two rakahs sitting down after saying the taslim; and that made nine rakahs. O my son; when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered a prayer; he liked to continue to offer it; and when sleep; sickness; or pain distracted him from praying Qiyam AlLail; he would pray twelve rakahs during the day. I am not aware of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ having recited the whole Quran during a single night; or praying through the whole night until morning; or fasting a complete month; except Ramadan. He mostly told us how his people; the Quraysh; behaved with him. He would say: We were not equal; we were weak and degraded at Mecca according to Mousaddad version. When we came over to Medina the fighting began between us; sometimes we overcome them and at other times they overcome us. One night he came late and did not come at the time he used to come. We asked him: You came late tonight? He said: I could not recite the fixed part of the Quran that I used to recite every day. I disliked to come till I had completed it. Aws said: I asked the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ : How do you divide the Quran for daily recitation?
