Zainab Allah be pleased with her said: I heard my mother Umm Salamah Allah be pleased with her as saying: A woman came to Allah Messenger ﷺ and said: Allah Messenger. I have a daughter whose husband has died and there has developed some trouble in her eye; should we apply collyrium to it? Thereupon Allah Messenger ﷺ said: No repeating it twice or thrice; saying only; NO all the time. Then he said: It is only four mouths and ten days; whereas in the preIslamic period none of you threw away the dung until one year had passed. Humaid said: I said to Zainab: What is this throwing of dung until a year is passed? Zainab said: When the husband of a woman died; she went into a hut and put on her worst clothes; and did not apply perfume or something like it until a year was over. She said: So I observed my Iddah there for four months and ten days. She said: During the time of Uthman; he sent a message to me asking me about that; so I informed him. Bilal went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him what these women had instructed him to ask. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him who these women were. He Bilal said: They are women from Ansar and Zainab. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Which of the Zainabs? He said: The wife of Abdullah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There are two rewards for them; the reward of kinship and the reward of Sadaqa.eward of kinship and the reward of Sadaqa. +

Zaynab said; In the Aljahiliya when a woman husband died; she went into a small tent and dressed in the worst of clothes. She did not touch perfume or anything until a year had passed. Then she was brought an animal - a donkey; a sheep; or a bird; and she would break her idda with it; by rubbing her body against it taftaddu. Rarely did she break her idda with anything by rubbing herself against it but that it died. Then she would come out and would be given a piece of dung. She would throw it away and then return to whatever she wished of perfumes or whatever. Malik explained; Taftaddu means to wipe her skin with it in the same way as with a healing charm.t in the same way as with a healing charm. +

So I repeated my story which I had already mentioned about my husband. Thereupon he said: Stay in your house till the term lapses. She said: So I passed my waiting period in it her house for four months and ten days. When Uthman Ibn Affan became caliph; he sent for me and asked me about that; so I informed him; and he followed it and decided cases accordingly.followed it and decided cases accordingly. +

He then took oath without making any exception; i. e. without saying In sha Allah that it was the twenty-seventh night. I said to him: Abu Mundhir; on what ground do you say that? Thereupon he said: By the indication or by the sign which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us; and that is that on that day the sun would rise without having any ray in it.n would rise without having any ray in it. +

He said: Yes; we were in one of our journeys with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man; a harsh; foolish Bedouin; who had been at the end of the group; called him with a loud voice; saying: O Muhammad! O Muhammad! So the people said to him Mah! Indeed; you have been prohibited from this. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded to him with similar to his voice: Come. So he said: A man loves a people but he has not reached them? He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: A man is with whomever he loves.Zirr said: He did not cease reporting to me until he had reported that Allah; the Mighty and Sublime; has appointed a gate in the west - its width is the distance of a seventy-year journey - for repentance: it shall not be locked until the sun rises from its direction; and that is the Statement of Allah; Blessed be He and Most High; of the Ayah: The Day some of the signs of your Lord come; no soul shall be benefited by its believing.soul shall be benefited by its believing. +

He said: Yes; he ﷺ used to order us; that when we were travelers - or - in travel; to not remove our Khuff for three days and nights except; from sexual impurity; but not from defecation; urination; and sleep. He said: Have you heard him ﷺ mention anything concerning love? He said: Yes. We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey when a Bedouin with a loud voice called upon him saying : O Muhammad! So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded to him with a voice similar to him saying : Come. So we said to him: Lower your voice for you are with the Prophet ﷺ ; and you have been prohibited from this. He said: By Allah; I will not lower my voice. The Bedouin said: A man loves a people but he is not with them in terms of deeds ? He ﷺ said: A man is with whomever he loves on the Day Of Judgment. So he did not cease talking with us; until he mentioned a gate in the direction of the west with the width of seventy years journey - or a rider would travel its width - for forty or seventy years. Sufyan one of the narrators said: In the direction of AlSham; Allah created it the Day He created the heavens and the earth; open - that is; for repentance. It shall not be locked until the sun rises through it.be locked until the sun rises through it. +

He replied: May Allah have mercy on Abu Abdulrahman By Allah; he knew that it was in Ramadan; Mousaddad version goes but he disliked that the people should content themselves with that night alone ; or he liked that the people should not content themselves with the night alone. According to the agreed version: By Allah; it is the twenty-seventh night of Ramadan; without any reservation. I said: How did you know that; Abu AlMundhir? He replied: By the indication or sign of which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us. I asked Zirr: What is the sign ? He replied: The sun rises like a vessel of water in the morning following that night; it has no rays until it rises high up.ht; it has no rays until it rises high up. +
