SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1592 | Narrated Ibn Abbas: I used to teach the Quran to some people of the Muhajirln emigrants ; among whom there was Abdulrahman Bin Auf. While I was in his house at Mina; and he was with Umar Bin AlKhattab during Umar last Hajj; Abdulrahman came to me and said; Would that you had seen the man who came today to the Chief of the Believers Umar ; saying; O Chief of the Believers! What do you think about so-and-so who says; If Umar should die; I will give the pledge of allegiance to such-andsuch person; as by Allah; the pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr was nothing but a prompt sudden action which got established afterwards. Umar became angry and then said; Allah willing; I will stand before the people tonight and warn them against those people who want to deprive the others of their rights the question of rulership. Abdulrahman said; I said; O Chief of the believers! Do not do that; for the season of Hajj gathers the riff-raff and the rubble; and it will be they who will gather around you when you stand to address the people. And I am afraid that you will get up and say something; and some people will spread your statement and may not say what you have actually said and may not understand its meaning; and may interpret it incorrectly; so you should wait till you reach Medina; as it is the place of emigration and the place of Prophet Traditions; and there you can come in touch with the learned and noble people; and tell them your ideas with confidence; and the learned people will understand your statement and put it in its proper place. On that; Umar said; By Allah! Allah willing; I will do this in the first speech I will deliver before the people in Medina. Ibn Abbas added: We reached Medina by the end of the month of Dhu AlHijja; and when it was Friday; we went quickly to the Masjid as soon as the sun had declined; and I saw Saeed Bin Zaid Bin Amr Bin Nufail sitting at the corner of the pulpit; and I too sat close to him so that my knee was touching his knee; and after a short while Umar Bin AlKhattab came out; and when I saw him coming towards us; I said to Saeed Bin Zaid Bin Amr Bin Nufail Today Umar will say such a thing as he has never said since he was chosen as Caliph. Saeed denied my statement with astonishment and said; What thing do you expect Umar to say the like of which he has never said before? In the meantime; Umar sat on the pulpit and when the callmakers for the prayer had finished their call; Umar stood up; and having glorified and praised Allah as He deserved; he said; Now then; I am going to tell you something which Allah has written for me to say. I do not know; perhaps it portends my death; so whoever understands and remembers it; must narrate it to the others wherever his mount takes him; but if somebody is afraid that he does not understand it; then it is unlawful for him to tell lies about me. Allah sent Muhammad with the Truth and revealed the Holy Book to him; and among what Allah revealed; was the Verse of the Rajam the stoning of married person male & female who commits illegal sexual intercourse; and we did recite this Verse and understood and memorized it. Allah Messenger ﷺ did carry out the punishment of stoning and so did we after him. I am afraid that after a long time has passed; somebody will say; By Allah; we do not find the Verse of the Rajam in Allah Book; and thus they will go astray by leaving an obligation which Allah has revealed. And the punishment of the Rajam is to be inflicted to any married person male & female ; who commits illegal sexual intercourse; if the required evidence is available or there is conception or confession. And then we used to recite among the Verses in Allah Book: O people! Do not claim to be the offspring of other than your fathers; as it is disbelief unthankfulness on your part that you claim to be the offspring of other than your real father. Then Allah Messenger ﷺ said; Do not praise me excessively as Jesus; son of Marry was praised; but call me Allah Slave and His Apostles. O people! I have been informed that a speaker amongst you says; By Allah; if Umar should die; I will give the pledge of allegiance to such-and-such person. One should not deceive oneself by saying that the pledge of allegiance given to Abu Bakr was given suddenly and it was successful. No doubt; it was like that; but Allah saved the people from its evil; and there is none among you who has the qualities of Abu Bakr. Remember that whoever gives the pledge of allegiance to anybody among you without consulting the other Muslims; neither that person; nor the person to whom the pledge of allegiance was given; are to be supported; lest they both should be killed. And no doubt after the death of the Prophet ﷺ we were informed that the Ansar disagreed with us and gathered in the shed of Bani Sada. Ali and AlZubair and whoever was with them; opposed us; while the emigrants gathered with Abu Bakr. I said to Abu Bakr; Let go to these Ansari brothers of ours. So we set out seeking them; and when we approached them; two pious men of theirs met us and informed us of the final decision of the Ansar; and said; O group of Muhajirin emigrants ! Where are you going? We replied; We are going to these Ansari brothers of ours. They said to us; You shouldnt go near them. Carry out whatever we have already decided. I said; By Allah; we will go to them. And so we proceeded until we reached them at the shed of Bani Sada. Behold! There was a man sitting amongst them and wrapped in something. I asked; Who is that man? They said; He is Saad Bin Ubada. I asked; What is wrong with him? They said; He is sick. After we sat for a while; the Ansar speaker said; None has the right to be worshipped but Allah; and praising Allah as He deserved; he added; To proceed; we are Allah Ansar helpers and the majority of the Muslim army; while you; the emigrants; are a small group and some people among you came with the intention of preventing us from practicing this matter of caliphate and depriving us of it. When the speaker had finished; I intended to speak as I had prepared a speech which I liked and which I wanted to deliver in the presence of Abu Bakr; and I used to avoid provoking him. So; when I wanted to speak; Abu Bakr said; Wait a while. I disliked to make him angry. So Abu Bakr himself gave a speech; and he was wiser and more patient than I. By Allah; he never missed a sentence that I liked in my own prepared speech; but he said the like of it or better than it spontaneously. After a pause he said; O Ansar! You deserve all the qualities that you have attributed to yourselves; but this question of Caliphate is only for the Quraish as they are the best of the Arabs as regards descent and home; and I am pleased to suggest that you choose either of these two men; so take the oath of allegiance to either of them as you wish. And then Abu Bakr held my hand and Abu Ubaida Bin AlJarrah hand who was sitting amongst us. I hated nothing of what he had said except that proposal; for by Allah; I would rather have my neck chopped off as expiator for a sin than become the ruler of a nation; one of whose members is Abu Bakr; unless at the time of my death my own-self suggests something I dont feel at present. And then one of the Ansar said; I am the pillar on which the camel with a skin disease eczema rubs itself to satisfy the itching i.e.; I am a noble ; and I am as a high class palm tree! O Quraish. There should be one ruler from us and one from you. Then there was a hue and cry among the gathering and their voices rose so that I was afraid there might be great disagreement; so I said; O Abu Bakr! Hold your hand out. He held his hand out and I pledged allegiance to him; and then all the emigrants gave the Pledge of allegiance and so did the Ansar afterwards. And so we became victorious over Saad Bin Ubada whom AlAnsar wanted to make a ruler. One of the Ansar said; You have killed Saad Bin Ubada. I replied; Allah has killed Saad Bin Ubada. Umar added; By Allah; apart from the great tragedy that had happened to us i.e. the death of the Prophet ; there was no greater problem than the allegiance pledged to Abu Bakr because we were afraid that if we left the people; they might give the Pledge of allegiance after us to one of their men; in which case we would have given them our consent for something against our real wish; or would have opposed them and caused great trouble. So if any person gives the Pledge of allegiance to somebody to become a Caliph without consulting the other Muslims; then the one he has selected should not be granted allegiance; lest both of them should be killed. | The Chapter on Oaths And Pledges And Charity in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The Rajm of a married lady pregnant through illegal sexual intercourse in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1702 | Narrated Ibn Abbas: Regarding the Holy Verse:-And to everyone; We have appointed heirs.. And:- 4.33 To those also to Whom your right hands have pledged. 4.33 When the emigrants came to Medina; the Ansar used to be the heir of the emigrants and vice versa instead of their own kindred by blood Dhawl Alarham ; and that was because of the bond of brotherhood which the Prophet ﷺ had established between them; i.e. the Ansar and the emigrants. But when the Divine Verse:- And to everyone We have appointed heirs; 4.33 was revealed; it cancelled the other; order i.e. To those also; to whom Your right hands have pledged. | The Chapter on Revelation And Quraish in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on Kindred by blood in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-1975 | Narrated Umar Bin AlKhattab: The Prophet ﷺ said; O people! The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions; and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So; whoever emigrated for Allah and His Apostle; then his emigration was for Allah and His Apostle; and whoever emigrated to take worldly benefit or for a woman to marry; then his emigration was for what he emigrated for. | The Chapter on Jihad Manners in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on Avoiding the use of tricks in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-2094 | Narrated Umar Bin AlKhattab: I heard Allah Messenger ﷺ saying; The reward of deeds; depend upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for the sake of Allah and His Apostle; then his emigration will be considered to be for Allah and His Apostle; and whoever emigrated for the sake of worldly gain or for a woman to marry; then his emigration will be considered to be for what he emigrated for. | The Chapter on Assignments And Rewards in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The intention in taking oaths in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-2402 | Narrated Abdullah Bin Abbas: Umar Bin AlKhattab departed for Sham and when he reached Sargh; the commanders of the Muslim army; Abu Ubaida Bin AlJarrah and his companions met him and told him that an epidemic had broken out in Sham. Umar said; Call for me the early emigrants. So Umar called them; consulted them and informed them that an epidemic had broken out in Sham. Those people differed in their opinions. Some of them said; We have come out for a purpose and we do not think that it is proper to give it up; while others said to Umar ; You have along with you. other people and the companions of Allah Messenger ﷺ so do not advise that we take them to this epidemic. Umar said to them; Leave me now. Then he said; Call the Ansar for me. I called them and he consulted them and they followed the way of the emigrants and differed as they did. He then said to them; Leave me now; and added; Call for me the old people of Quraish who emigrated in the year of the Conquest of Mecca. I called them and they gave a unanimous opinion saying; We advise that you should return with the people and do not take them to that place of epidemic. So Umar made an announcement; I will ride back to Medina in the morning; so you should do the same. Abu Ubaida Bin AlJarrah said to Umar ; Are you running away from what Allah had ordained? Umar said; Would that someone else had said such a thing; O Abu Ubaida! Yes; we are running from what Allah had ordained to what Allah has ordained. Dont you agree that if you had camels that went down a valley having two places; one green and the other dry; you would graze them on the green one only if Allah had ordained that; and you would graze them on the dry one only if Allah had ordained that? At that time Abdulrahman Bin Auf; who had been absent because of some job; came and said; I have some knowledge about this. I have heard Allah Messenger ﷺ saying; If you hear about it an outbreak of plague in a land; do not go to it; but if plague breaks out in a country where you are staying; do not run away from it. Umar thanked Allah and returned to Medina. | The Chapter on Cities Yemen And Epidemic in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on What has been mentioned about the plague in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-2680 | Narrated Abu Saeed AlKhudri: A bedouin said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! Inform me about the emigration. The Prophet ﷺ said; Waihaka May Allah be merciful to you ! The question of emigration is a difficult one. Have you got some camels? The bedouin said; Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said; Do you pay their Zakat? He said; Yes. The Prophet said; Go on doing like this from beyond the seas; for Allah will not let your deeds go in vain. | The Chapter on Journeys And Travel And Bedouins in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on Saying Wailaka in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-2863 | Narrated Aisha: Some Muslim men emigrated to Ethiopia whereupon Abu Bakr also prepared himself for the emigration; but the Prophet ﷺ said to him ; Wait; for I hope that Allah will allow me also to emigrate. Abu Bakr said; Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you. Do you hope that emigration ? The Prophet said; Yes. So Abu Bakr waited to accompany the Prophet ﷺ and fed two camels he had on the leaves of AlSamur tree regularly for four months One day while we were sitting in our house at midday; someone said to Abu Bakr; Here is Allah Messenger ﷺ ; coming with his head and a part of his face covered with a cloth-covering at an hour he never used to come to us. Abu Bakr said; Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you; O Prophet ! An urgent matter must have brought you here at this hour. The Prophet ﷺ came and asked the permission to enter; and he was allowed. The Prophet ﷺ entered and said to Abu Bakr; Let those who are with you; go out. Abu Bakr replied; There is no stranger ; they are your family. Let my father be sacrificed for you; O Allah Apostle! The Prophet ﷺ said; I have been allowed to leave Mecca. Abu Bakr said; I shall accompany you; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ; Let my father be sacrificed for you! The Prophet ﷺ said; Yes; Abu Bakr said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ s! Let my father be sacrificed for you. Take one of these two shecamels of mine The Prophet ﷺ said. I will take it only after paying its price. So we prepared their baggage and put their journey food In a leather bag. And Asma bint Abu Bakr cut a piece of her girdle and tied the mouth of the leather bag with it. That is why she was called Dhatan- Nitaqaln. Then the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr went to a cave in a mountain called Thour and remained there for three nights. Abdullah Bin Abu Bakr. who was a young intelligent man. used to stay with them at night and leave before dawn so that in the morning; he would he with the Quraish at Mecca as if he had spent the night among them. If he heard of any plot contrived by the Quraish against the Prophet and Abu Bakr; he would understand it and return to inform them of it when it became dark. Amir Bin Fuhaira; the freed slave of Abu Bakr used to graze a flock of milch sheep for them and he used to take those sheep to them when an hour had passed after the Isha prayer. They would sleep soundly till Amir Bin Fuhaira awakened them when it was still dark. He used to do that in each of those three nights. | The Chapter on Live Stock And Wolves And Shephards in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on AtTaqannu in Sahih AlBukhari
SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3153 | Narrated Ibn Abbas: The pagans were of two kinds as regards their relationship to the Prophet and the Believers. Some of them were those with whom the Prophet was at war and used to fight against; and they used to fight him; the others were those with whom the Prophet ﷺ made a treaty; and neither did the Prophet ﷺ fight them; nor did they fight him. If a lady from the first group of pagans emigrated towards the Muslims; her hand would not be asked in marriage unless she got the menses and then became clean. When she became clean; it would be lawful for her to get married; and if her husband emigrated too before she got married; then she would be returned to him. If any slave or female slave emigrated from them to the Muslims; then they would be considered free persons not slaves and they would have the same rights as given to other emigrants. The narrator then mentioned about the pagans involved with the Muslims in a treaty; the same as occurs in Mujahid narration. If a male slave or a female slave emigrated from such pagans as had made a treaty with the Muslims; they would not be returned; but their prices would be paid to the pagans. | The Chapter on Zakat And Slaves in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on Marrying AlMushrikat who had embraced Islam and their Idda in Sahih AlBukhari

O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants; examine them... 60.10 So if anyone of those believing women accepted the above mentioned conditions; she accepted the conditions of faith. When they agreed on those conditions and confessed that with their tongues; Allah Messenger ﷺ would say to them; Go; I have accepted your oath of allegiance for Islam. By Allah; and hand of Allah Messenger ﷺ never touched the hand of any woman; but he only used to take their pledge of allegiance orally. By Allah; Allah Messenger ﷺ did not take the pledge of allegiance of the women except in accordance with what Allah had ordered him. He asked; Why does she not speak. The people said; She has intended to perform Hajj without speaking. He said to her; Speak; for it is illegal not to speak; as it is an action of the pre-islamic period of ignorance. So she spoke and said; Who are you? He said; A man from the Emigrants. She asked; Which Emigrants? He replied; From Quraish. She asked; From what branch of Quraish are you? He said; You ask too many questions; I am Abu Bakr. She said; How long shall we enjoy this good order i.e. Islamic religion which Allah has brought after the period of ignorance? He said; You will enjoy it as long as your Imams keep on abiding by its rules and regulations. She asked; What are the Imams? He said; Were there not heads and chiefs of your nation who used to order the people and they used to obey them? She said; Yes. A believer used to run away with his religion to Allah and His Apostle lest he should be put to trial because of his religion. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-3868 | Narrated Jabir: We were in the company of the Prophet ﷺ in a Ghazwa. A large number of emigrants joined him and among the emigrants there was a person who used to play jokes or play with spears ; so he jokingly stroked an Ansari man on the hip. The Ans-ari got so angry that both of them called their people. The Ansari said; Help; O Ansar! And the emigrant said Help; O emigrants! The Prophet ﷺ came out and said; What is wrong with the people as they are calling this call of the period of Ignorance? Then he said; What is the matter with them? So he was told about the stroke of the emigrant to the Ansari. The Prophet ﷺ said; Stop this i.e. appeal for help for it is an evil call. Abdullah Bin Ubai Bin Salul a hypocrite said; The emigrants have called and gathered against us ; so when we return to Medina; surely; the more honorable people will expel therefrom the meaner; Upon that Umar said; O Allah Prophet! Shall we not kill this evil person i.e. Abdullah Bin Ubai Bin Salul ? SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4099 | Narrated Marwan and AlMiswar Bin Makhrama: from the companions of Allah Messenger ﷺ When Suhail Bin Amr agreed to the Treaty of Hudaibiya ; one of the things he stipulated then; was that the Prophet ﷺ should return to them i.e. the pagans anyone coming to him from their side; even if he was a Muslim; and would not interfere between them and that person. The Muslims did not like this condition and got disgusted with it. Suhail did not agree except with that condition. So; the Prophet ﷺ agreed to that condition and returned Abu Jandal to his father Suhail Bin Amr. Thenceforward the Prophet ﷺ returned everyone in that period of truce even if he was a Muslim. During that period some believing women emigrants including Um Kulthum bint Uqba Bin Abu Muait who came to Allah Messenger ﷺ and she was a young lady then. Her relative came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him to return her; but the Prophet ﷺ did not return her to them for Allah had revealed the following Verse regarding women: O you who believe! When the believing women come to you as emigrants. SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4118 | Narrated AlZuhri: Urwa said; Aisha told me that Allah Messenger ﷺ used to examine the women emigrants. We have been told also that when Allah revealed the order that the Muslims should return to the pagans what they had spent on their wives who emigrated after embracing Islam and that the Muslims should not keep unbelieving women as their wives; Umar divorced two of his wives; Qariba; the daughter of Abu Umayah and the daughter of Jarwal AlKhuzai. Later on Muawiya married Qariba and Abu Jahm married the other. When the pagans refused to pay what the Muslims had spent on their wives; Allah revealed: And if any of your wives have gone from you to the unbelievers and you have an accession by the coming over of a woman from the other side then pay to those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent on their Mahr. 60.11 So; Allah ordered that the Muslim whose wife has gone; should be given; as a compensation of the Mahr he had given to his wife; from the Mahr of the wives of the pagans who had emigrated deserting their husbands. We do not know any of the women emigrants who deserted Islam after embracing it. A man will be rewarded only for what he intended. SahihMuslim-017-001-19752 | Jabir Bin Abdullah reported: We were along with Allah Messenger ﷺ in an expedition that a person from amongst the emigrants struck at the back of a person from the Ansir. The Ansiri said: O Ansar! And the Muhijir said: O Emigrants! Thereupon Allah Messenger ﷺ said: What are these proclamations of the Days of Ignorance? They said: Allah Messenger; a person from the emigrants struck at the back of an Ansari; whereupon he said: It is something disgusting. Abdullah Bin Ubay heard it and said: They have indeed done it. By Allah; when we would return to Medina the respectable amongst them the Ansar would turn away the mean the emigrants. SahihMuslim-017-001-22078 | Anas Bin Malik reported: We conquered Mecca and then we went on an expedition to Hunain. The polytheists came; forming themselves into the best rows that I have seen. They first formed the rows of cavalry; then those of infantry; and then those of women behind them. Then there were formed the rows of sheep and goats and then of other animals. We were also people large in number; and our number had reached six thousand. And on one side Khalid Bin Walid was in charge of the cavalry. And our horses at once turned back from our rear. And we could hardly hold our own when our horses were exposed; and the bedouins and the people whom we knew took to their heels. Seeing this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called thus: O emigrants; O emigrants. He then. said: O Ansar; O Ansar. Anas said: This hadith is transmitted by a group of eminent persons. We said: At thy beck and call are we; Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then advanced and he Anas said: By Allah; we had not yet reached them when Allah defeated them. and we took possession of the wealth and we then marched towards Taif; and we besieged them for forty nights. and then came back to Mecca and encamped at a place ; and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to bestow a hundred camels upon each individual. SahihMuslim-017-001-24337 | Abu Huraira reported: The poor amongst the emigrants came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: The possessors of great wealth have obtained the highest ranks and the lasting bliss. He the Holy Prophet said: How is that? They said: They pray as we pray; and they observe fast as we observe fast; and they give charity but we do not give charity; and they set slaves free but we do not set slaves free. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Shall I not teach you something by which you will catch upon those who have preceded you; and get ahead of those who come after you; only those who do as you do being more excellent than you? They said: Yes; Messenger of Allah. He the Holy Prophet said: Extol Allah; declare His Greatness; and Praise Him thirty-three times after every prayer. Summon them to Islam and if they agree; accept it from them and refrain from them. Then summon them to leave their territory and transfer to the abode of the Emigrants and tell them that if they do so; they will have the same rights and responsibilities as the Emigrants; but if they refuse and choose their own abode; tell them that they will be like the desert Arabs who are Muslims subject to Allaahs jurisdiction which applies to the believers; but will have no spoil or booty unless they strive with the Muslims.
