If they had only referred it to the Messenger, or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have Tested it from them (direct). Were it not for the Grace and Mercy of Allah unto you, all but a few of you would have fallen into the clutches of Satan.
The people of the Book ask thee to cause a book to descend to them from heaven: Indeed they asked Moses for an even greater (miracle), for they said: "Show us Allah in public," but they were dazed for their presumption, with thunder and lightning. Yet they worshipped the calf even after clear signs had come to them; even so we forgave them; and gave Moses manifest proofs of authority.

SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4958Narrated Ubai Bin Kaab I found a purse containing one hundred Diners. So I went to the Prophet and informed him about it ; he said; Make public announcement about it for one year I did so; but nobody turned up to claim it; so I again went to the Prophet ﷺ who said; Make public announcement for another year. I did; but none turned up to claim it. I went to him for the third time and he said; Keep the container and the string which is used for its tying and count the money it contains and if its owner comes; give it to him; otherwise; utilize it. The sub-narrator Salama said; I met him Suwaid; another sub-narrator in Mecca and he said; I dont know whether Ubai made the announcement for three years or just one year. The Chapter on Lost And Found And Public Announcements in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on Owner proof in Sahih AlBukhari

Hadith PageArabic TextEnglish TranslationBook and Chapter
SahihMuslim-017-001-17724It has been reported on the authority of Abu Humaid AlSaidi who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed a man from the Azd tribe. called Ibn Al; Utbiya; in charge of Sadaqat to be received from Banu Sulaim. When he came back ; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him to render his account. He said: This wealth is for you i. e. for the public treasury and this is a gift presented to me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You should have remained in the house of your father and your mother; until your gift came to you if you spoke the truth; then he addressed us. He praised God and extolled Him; and afterwards said: I appoint a man from you to a responsible post sharing with the authority that God has entrusted to me; and he comes to me saying: This wealth is for you i. e. for the public treasury and this is a gift presented to me. Why did he not remain in the house of his father and his mother and his gift came to him; if he was truthful? By God; any one of you will not take anything from the public funds without any justification; but will meet his Lord carrying it on himself on the Day of judgment. I will recognise any one of you meeting Allah and carrying a growling camel; or a cow bellowing or a goat bleating. Then he raised his hands so high that whiteness of his armpits could be seen. Then he said: O my Lord; I have conveyed Thy Commandments. The narrator says: My eyes saw the Prophet standing in that pose and my ears heard what he said. The Chapter on Truth And Hypocrisy And Martyrs in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on 7 in Sahih Muslim

In his narration Ibn Numair one of the narrators said: I found a lost whip and took it. They said: Leave it. I said: I will not leave it to be eaten by predators. I will take it to make use of it. So I met up with Ubay Bin Kaab and asked him about that. So he narrated the Hadith; he said: That is fine. I found a sack containing one hundred Dinar during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ He said: So I brought it to him. He said to me: Make a public announcement about it for one year. So I announced it for a year but did not find anyone to claim it. Then I brought it to him. He said to me: Make a public announcement about it for another year. So I announced it for a year but did not find anyone to claim it. Then I brought it to him. He said: Make a public announcement about if for another year. And he said: Remember its amount; its container and its string. If someone comes seeking it and informs you of its amount and its string; then give it to him; otherwise use it.The Chapter on Lost And Found And Public Announcements in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on What Has Been Related About Lost Items The Stray Camel And Sheep in Sunan AlTermithi
