Had it not been for a previous ordainment from Allah, a severe penalty would have reached you for the (ransom) that ye took.
As to those who reject Faith, - if they had everything on earth, and twice repeated, to give as ransom for the penalty of the Day of Judgment, it would never be accepted of them, theirs would be a grievous penalty.
Leave alone those who take their religion to be mere play and amusement, and are deceived by the life of this world. But proclaim (to them) this (truth): that every soul delivers itself to ruin by its own acts: it will find for itself no protector or intercessor except Allah: if it offered every ransom, (or reparation), none will be accepted: such is (the end of) those who deliver themselves to ruin by their own acts: they will have for drink (only) boiling water, and for punishment, one most grievous: for they persisted in rejecting Allah.
Even if the wrong-doers had all that there is on earth, and as much more, (in vain) would they offer it for ransom from the pain of the Penalty on the Day of Judgment: but something will confront them from Allah, which they could never have counted upon!
After this it is ye, the same people, who slay among yourselves, and banish a party of you from their homes; assist (Their enemies) against them, in guilt and rancour; and if they come to you as captives, ye ransom them, though it was not lawful for you to banish them. Then is it only a part of the Book that ye believe in, and do ye reject the rest? but what is the reward for those among you who behave like this but disgrace in this life?- and on the Day of Judgment they shall be consigned to the most grievous penalty. For Allah is not unmindful of what ye do.
For those who respond to their Lord, are (all) good things. But those who respond not to Him, - Even if they had all that is in the heavens and on earth, and as much more, (in vain) would they offer it for ransom. For them will the reckoning be terrible: their abode will be Hell, - what a bed of misery!
As to those who reject Faith, and die rejecting, - never would be accepted from any such as much gold as the earth contains, though they should offer it for ransom. For such is (in store) a penalty grievous, and they will find no helpers.
It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces Towards east or West; but it is righteousness- to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing.
Every soul that hath sinned, if it possessed all that is on earth, would fain give it in ransom: They would declare (their) repentance when they see the penalty: but the judgment between them will be with justice, and no wrong will be done unto them.
Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah's Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah, - He will never let their deeds be lost.

For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will, - it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.

SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4043Narrated Nafi: Umar Bin AlKhattab said; O Allah Messenger ﷺ ! I vowed to observe Itikaf for one day during the Prelslamic period. The Prophet ﷺ ordered him to fulfill his vow. Umar gained two lady captives from the war prisoners of Hunain and he left them in some of the houses at Mecca. When Allah Messenger ﷺ freed the captives of Hunain without ransom; they came out walking in the streets. Umar said to his son ; O Abdullah! See what is the matter. Abdullah replied; Allah Messenger ﷺ has freed the captives without ransom. He said to him ; Go and set free those two slave girls. Nafi added: Allah Apostle did not perform the Umra from AlJarana; and if he had performed the Umra; it would not have been hidden from Abdullah. The Chapter on Almaghazi And Expeditions in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on What the Prophet used to give to those Muslims whose faith was not so firm in Sahih AlBukhari

SahihAlBukhari-017-001-4917Narrated Marwan and AlMiswar Bin Makhrama: When the delegates of the tribe of Hawazin came to the Prophet ﷺ and they requested him to return their properties and captives. The Prophet ﷺ stood up and said to them; I have other people with me in this matter as you see and the most beloved statement to me is the true one; you may choose either the properties or the prisoners as I have delayed their distribution. The Prophet ﷺ had waited for them for more than ten days since his arrival from Taif. So; when it became evident to them that the Prophet ﷺ was not going to return them except one of the two; they said; We choose our prisoners. The Prophet got up amongst the people and glorified and praised Allah as He deserved and said; Then after; these brethren of yours have come to us with repentance; and I see it logical to return them the captives. So; whoever amongst you likes to do that as a favor; then he can do it; and whoever of you likes to stick to his share till we recompense him from the very first war booty which Allah will give us; then he can do so i.e. give up the present captives. The people unanimously said; We do that return the captives willingly. The Prophet ﷺ said; We do not know which of you has agreed to it and which have not; so go back and let your leaders forward us your decision. So; all the people then went back and discussed the matter with their leaders who returned and informed the Prophet ﷺ that all the people had willingly given their consent to return the captives. This is what has reached us about the captives of Hawazin. The Prophet ﷺ said; I did not think that your trouble reached to such an extent. Can you afford to slaughter a sheep as a ransom for shaving your head ? SahihMuslim-017-001-21941Abu Dharr reported: I went out one night and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ walking all alone. There was no man with him. I thought that he did not like anyone walking along with him. So I began to walk in the light of the moon. He; however turned his attention to me and saw me and said: Who is this? I said: It is Abu Dharr. Let Allah make me as ransom for you. He said: Abu Dharr; come on. He Abu Dharr said: So I walked along with him for some time and he said: The wealthy persons would have little reward on the Day of Resurrection; except upon whom Allah conferred goodness wealth. He dispensed it to his right; left; in front of him and at his back just as the wind diffuses fragrance and did good with it riches. I went along with him for some time when He said: Sit here. And he made me sit at a safe place and there were stones around it; and he said to me: Sit here till I come to you. He went away on the stony ground till I could not see him. He stayed away from me; and he prolonged his stay. Then I heard him as he came back and he was saying: Even if he committed theft and even if he committed fornication. When he came I could not help asking him: Apostle of Allah; let Allah make me ransom for you; whom were you speaking on the stony ground? I heard nobody responding to you. He the Holy Prophet said: It was Gabriel who met me by the side of the stony ground and said: Give glad tidings to your Ummah that he who died without associating ought with Allah would go into Paradise. I said: Gabriel; even if he committed theft and fornication? He said: Yes. I said: Even it he committed theft and fornication? He said: Yes; I again said: Even if he committed theft and fornication? So he chose what is with Him. So Abu Bakr said: We will ransom our fathers and mothers for you O Messenger of Allah! He said: So we were amazed. Then the people said: Look at this old man. SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-25699Ali said We wrote down nothing on the authority of the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ but the Quran and what this document contains.. He reported the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ as saying Madeenah is sacred from Air to Thawr so if anyone produces an innovation in it or gives protection to an innovator the curse of Allaah; angels and all men will fall upon him and no repentance or ransom will be accepted from him. The protection granted by Muslim is one even if the humblest of them grants it. So if anyone breaks a covenant made by a Muslim the curse of Allaah; angels and all men will fall upon him and no repentance or ransom will be accepted from him. Malik said that divorce was ratified for a woman who ransomed herself from her husband; when it was known that her husband was detrimental to her and was oppressive for her; and it was known that he wronged her; and he had to return her property to her. I heard Malik say about muslim property that had been seized by the enemy; If it is noticed before the distribution; then it is returned to itsowner. Whatever has already been distributed is not returned to anyone. Malik; when asked about a man whose young male slave was taken by the idol worshippers and then the Muslims re-captured him; said; The owner is more entitled to him without having to pay his price or value or having to incur any loss before the distribution takes place. If the distribution has already taken place then I think that the slave belongs to his master for his price if the master wants him back. Regarding an umm walad of a Muslim man who has been taken by the idol worshippers and then recaptured by the Muslims and allotted in the distribution of spoils and then recognised by her master after the distribution; Malik said; She is not to be enslaved. I think that the Imam should pay a ransom for her for her master. If he does not do it; then her master must pay a ransom for her and not leave her. I do not think that she should be made a slave by whoever takes her and intercourse with her is not halal. She is in the position of a free woman because her master would be required to pay compensation if she injured somebody and so she is in the same position as a wife. He must not leave the mother of his son to be enslaved nor may intercourse with her be made halal. Malik was asked about a man who went to enemy territory to pay ransom or to trade; and he bought a free man or a slave; or they were given to him. He said; As for the free man; the price he buys him for is a debt against the man and he is not made a slave. If the captive is given to him freely; he is free and owes nothing unless the man gave something in recompense for him. That is a debt against the free man; the same as if a ransom had been paid for him. As for a slave; his former master can choose to take him back and pay his price to the man who bought him or he can choose to leave him; as he wishes. If he was given to the man; the former master is more entitled to him; and he owes nothing for him unless the man gave something for him in recompense. Whatever he gave for him is a loss against the master if he wants him back. The Chapter on Slaves And Praise And Worship in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Divorce in Muwata Malik
